Question for people experienced in keeping larger numbers of corys...

I've got 14 pandas and 6 pepper corys (plus a couple of pygmys and hasbrosus too) in a Blue Planet Paradiso triangle aquarium...all been happy for a year or so.

I want to get a larger (rectangle) tank so i can increase their numbers, by maximising the surface area that they play in (triangle shape not ideal for that) and possibly have shallower tank (current tank is 62cm high).

All the corys have no problems reaching the top of current tank for their gulp of air, but wondering if the recommended max height should be somewhat lower ...and do they need a minimum height for propelling themselves upward?

Happy to get custom tank made (deeper horizontally) rather than tall, if its deemed to be more ideal.

i have cories in a tank 15" tall, no problems.

No, I don't think the height matters at all in terms of reaching the surface and they actually like exploring higher areas of the tank providing there's decorations and plants for them there to sniff around. Plus corys don't go to the surface that too often if the water is well oxygenated. What I would worry about is lack of flow around the bottom of the tank to keep it clean which probably is the cause for problems in tall tanks and corys. So make sure you have more than adequate filtration and if needs be add a power head for lower levels.

I think in terms of numbers, the main thing here is the surface area of the tank. They spend most of their time on the bottom or around boxwood/plants/etc. Very rarely have i seen corys at the surface of the tank, unless one or 2 have followed a hyperactive one? I can't see the tank height being too important to be honest
