I have just recently acquired a tank and some fish, but I have no idea what one fish is. I can't find a picture that looks the same either.

The fish is a few years old (I don't know exact age, 1-2 years old) and approx 4-6 inches:

oh dear its a pangasisus of some kind :/

Well, that might suck... I have just asked, and he might only be a year old -_-
If it is indeed an iridescent shark (yeah, no scientific names from this corner), I can see how problematic that could be. What is the growth rate of said catfish? Does it take a long time to grow, or should it show within a year that it will become a very large fish? Now, it might be the tank is currently big enough, but unlike most iridescent sharks I've seen before, he does not repeatedly bash in the glass or other objects.

Now you have me worried too :( bugger.

I wouldnt worry too much, im sure you can cook a decently meal out of it in a few months :) Realisticly, thats your best option.

it's funny you say that as it is exactly what got said in my house when I said they can grow up to 44kg

Any idea on the growth rate? I've tried looking and I can't find anything that says how fast they grow. I'm very curious because we've had him about a year (or more) and he's pretty small.

Provided that water conditions and food stuffs meet his standards these guys can grow pretty damn fast in my experience with them. My Hi-fin pang grew from 4inch to about a foot in length in about 6 months, thats pretty impressive!
