So, I just took over care of a tank and of course, I've never had live plants in my fish tank before! lol I've tried to figure out what plants they are, but I'm not 100% sure.

If you know what plants I have, it would be great to know for sure! Also, based on the pictures, how heavily/lightly planted is my tank (i.e. for nutrition purposes). Approximately the front 2/5 of my tank is not planted:

1. 2-3 different plants:

2. 1 plant

3. 1 plant (the tall weed-like plant)

4. 1 plant

In the first picture........the one on the left is a type of Vallisneria. The one in the middle and on the right I believe to be some sort of Echinodorus (amazon sword specie).
Picture 2, it's a specie of Anubias. It's not doing too well because Rhizome is buried in the gravel. It needs to be un-covered.
Picture 3, Hornwort.
Picture 4, A type of Cryptocoryne I think.

Rhizome??? okay, I'll take a look to see what this all means.

Thanks!

Any idea on how to rate how 'planted' my tank is? All the plants a pretty spread out like in the 1st and somewhat 3rd picture. The front 2/5 is not planted.

From what I can see, I'd say medium planted. But to be honest, they seem to be struggleing somewhat...

Red plants looks like Alternanthera reineckii or Ludwigia glandulosa. Both are quite difficult.
The two green plants are Egeria densa/Elodea densa, which is simple to keep and I've seen it thrive in tanks with a single light tube and fully stocked fish bio-load.

yeah i bought those green ones last week and theyve alrdy doubled in size, i trimmed em down 50% today just b4 i took that pic but they we at the top of the water.

Ive only had the red one a few days and its been a pain in the backside! Its so sensitive and looses its leaves with the slightest touch. I needed a lil colour in there tho

They are struggling. I just moved in a few weeks ago and the entire tank was covered in algae (BGA I think?). I was pulling fist-fulls of the stuff out. I've removed the worst of the leaves on the plants, so it looks a lot better than when I first encountered the tank! It's a 60 US gal tank (approx) and is about 20 inches of water depth. I'm currently using 2x T-12 30w 5000k fluorescent lights and looking at more, but I'm worried that with more lights I'll have to work hard to keep algae from growing. Once I get more fish, will it be enough to add chelated iron and a source of carbon (if the fish don't supply enough C02)?
