The product:: “Ick Clear Tank Buddies” by Jungle. They’re tablets that “fizz” when added to the tank. (shouldn’t it be “Ich Clear”, I’m guessing it’s a trademark thing)

The question: When do you place the charcoal back into the filter system and turn the lights back on?

Instructions say a second application can be made after 24 hours with a 25% water change. Does this mean the medication is 75% inactive after 24 hours in the tank? Doesn’t it take 7 days (or more with no temperature increase) to destroy the free swimming ich causing parasites? If anyone has used this product before, I would appreciate hearing your opinions.

Water parameters before adding the tablets:
Nitrate (NO3): ~20 ppm
Nitite: (NO2) ~0 ppm
Hardness (GH) ~75 ppm
Alkalinity (KH) ~80 ppm
pH: ~8.0
Temperature: 76°
(Ammonia count unavailable)

In the past 20 years I haven’t used medications in my tanks. I suspect things are different now. I’ve always treated diseases/problems with diet, cleaning and frequent water changes etc. There’s a sad story that goes along with this if anyone is interested. The sad part is I need to find a new LFS.

When do you place the charcoal back into the filter system and turn the lights back on? 24 hours or 168 hours (7 days)?

well for starters that stuff is way overpriced. :) Quick cure works just as well and costs far less

Now to answer your question, I'd leave the carbon out until all ick spots were gone and remain gone 24 hours.

Yes you probally need to treat for seven full days.

someone will come around and tell you the realistic times shortly, but it is like seven days at 85 degrees, and up to 28 days at 72 degrees if I remember correctly.

So up your temperature, keep carbon out until spots are gone, and continue treating as needed. You'll all be fine

Finally a question I can answer with certainty! I myself have used this exact med your talking about, same brand and all. Anyhow, the dosage is a pill per 10 gallons of water for full dosage. I had a 20gal tank that had some ick related signs on the platys. (other fish in the tank are albino cory cats and khuli loaches.)

Since the cats and loaches are sensitive to this med (after reading on it, I didn’t want to take a big risk) I just used one pill each 24 hours:

Day 1: 20% water change, removed carbon in filter insert by washing it in the removed tank water, and added 1 fizz tablet. Tank was bluish for an hour or so, but everything stained blue (silicone seals and air lines).

Day 2: same time added 1 tablet.

Day 3: noticed ick spots disappearing on platys, but still added 1 tablet dose.

Day 4: added 1 tablet.

Day 5: added 1 tablet.

Day 6: added 1 tablet.

Day 7: 20% water change, added 2 tablets

Day 8: stopped medication (I really wanted to go for a full 31days of using this like all the experts argue, but I took a chance)

Its already Day 30 now and all fish are happy, no signs of ick (it may be dormant but not on my fishes!)

Thanks, wasn't sure if I should remove the meds all at once with new charcoal or wait and reduce the meds with water changes first. Guess I'll leave the lights off til then also. I wonder why do the directions say no need to increase temperature? Is that to sell more of their product?

I did notice quick cure was cheaper and treats more gallons. Are there 225 drops in a ¾ oz. bottle? What’s the active ingredient?

quick cure turns the water blue, and permantly turns the sealent on the corners blue :(

Top of my head don't remember what the active ingrediants are. Don't have a bottle here right now.

Ick Clear will also stain your sealant

i use the quick cure. it did stain everything(sealents, airhose, ect) but My LFS said it was the best for getting rid of ick. i works to. sorry i cant help you with the other meds.
