I searched online and couldn't find an answer, so now I ask the wise council of fish people. What are the key differences between an ichthyologist and a marine biologist?

What is Marine Biology?

  • AmosTexTerrapin web
Marine biology is the study of marine organisms, their behaviors and interactions with the environment. Marine biologists study biological oceanography and the associated fields of chemical, physical, and geological oceanography to understand marine organisms.
  • Marine biology is a very broad area, so most researchers select a particular area of interest and specialize in it. Specializations can be based on a particular species, group, behavior, technique, or ecosystem.
  • Molecular biology is a related area of specialization in marine biology. Researchers apply molecular techniques to many environments ranging from coastal marshes to the deep sea and to various organisms such as viruses, plants, and fish.

Ichthyology is the branch of zoology devoted to the study of fish, including bony fish (Osteichthyes), cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes), and jawless fish (Agnatha).

What is the difference between a marine biologist and a ichthyologist?

An ichthyologist is a marine biologist who studies different fish species. They investigate things like the history, environment, reproductive habits and behavior of various fish species. Many ichthyologists specialize in a particular type of fish. Jun 24, 2022

The freshwater Ichthyologists I know have an enormous knowledge of habitat and evolutionary biology - the whole basis of what they study. It isn't like 100 years ago when taxonomists studied fish anatomy and species by dissecting fish in lab without any precise info on their habitats. Now there is a strong interest in how habitat and adaptation create fish species and how the fish affects the habitat, with all the other species around it.

The marine biologists have the same general understanding of the saltwater world, and those who specialize in fish are marine or freshwater ichthyologists.

From what I know
Marine biologists study the ocean ecosystem as a whole

Ichthyologists study fish

And freshwater ecologists are the freshwater equivalent of a marine biologist, studying the ecosystem as a whole
