Hi y'all!

About 4 days ago I noticed white spots on my black phantom tetra... then I looked around and one of my danios had spots on him...so I started treating the tank with Maroxy...I was told this would help. Well, this is day 4 on the meds and the spots have improved, after one death (a weak Candy Tetra)...should I continue on the meds longer? Any advice on using Aquarium salt? I have been including that...very sparingly. Thanks for any advice!!!

Angela

white spot tends to happen in 10 day cycles

on my treatment it says to add the liquid at intervals of 48 hours til the white spots have gone then again for another 2 days after they have gone

Tek :fish:

I'm having the same problem, and the ich just appears at the end of its cycle, but when it starts is inside the fish.. so probably (let's hope not) another fish has it but inside..
The minimum treatment for ich is 15 days, and if you check the levels of the water, etc, and see the fishes without any syntome (even just to see them behaving a little bit strange, moving a little bit clomsy) you have to repeat it for 15 days more (right now i'm on my 10th day.. and on the 15th, i will decide if to repeat it or not)
Very important is to take out any carbon from the filter while you treat ypur tank..

Well, hope this help
Good luck,
mm

Hi all.

Thanks teknikz and mmarch...

I hope your tank gets better, mmarch! Mine is looking much much better...hardly any signs of ich that I can see... (knock on wood)..

Like I said, I'm using Maroxy, don't know if you've heard of it... but it says to use as needed for no more than 5 days. I'm adding 1.25ml per 5 gal to my tank, as directed, twice a day. For the 1st 3 days, I added about 2 tsp Aquarium salt to the tank daily... I know this works well for goldfish...so I just lessened the amount of salt.

I'm on day 5 now... I don't feel good about continuing to use the Maroxy after today... any other suggestions as to what I can use to treat the tank for the remainder of the time? Thanks!

Angela

angela, becareful how much salt you add. if you have any scaleless fish, ie: tetras, loaches, catfish etc. they are not to happy with salt. they can be conditioned to it but 2 tsp added per day seems a bit much for scaleless fish. what is the tank size?

Hi Tanked... It's a 10 gallon. I was actually told (by the LFS) that the salt would be okay... moderately. Nice to know differently. I only added the salt for 3 days. I have done a 25% water change since then. Is this okay or do I need to do more?

Here is what I have...and I know I'm overcrowded, but I'm working on that...

1 pleco (he's about 6")
1 Clown Loach (small)
2 Candy Tetras
1 Long-skirt White Tetra
1 Long-skirt Black Widow Tetra
1 Black Phantom Tetra
2 Sarpe Tetras
2 Gold Tetras
1 Pearl Danio
2 Long-Finned Blue Danio
1 Long-Finned Zebra Danio
1 Long-Finned Leopard Danio

you can use salt with those fish as I add salt to my tanks as well. but in hlaf the recomended dose. it is recomended 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. I use one teaspoon per five gallons. I treated the entire tank once to get the levels where I needed them and then only treat the water during water changes now. I use a 5 gallon bucket and I add 1 teaspoon of aqurium salt to it (and dechlorinator) before adding to the tank.

as yes you are very over crowded in that tank. I hope it all works out.

ich is the most common fish disease that i here about alot. Buy some quick cure. it has some type of methialne blue in it. I worked for me. Beofre. Last time i was too late and i screwed it up casue i had glass fish in there and glass fish are sensitive to it so it killed them and i was to late to put it in. but it did prevented from to get ich.

Thnx TropicalFishfn...

I'll go to my LFS tonight and see what else they have...I'm starting to notice a couple of white specks on my Clown Loach:-(...so it looks like this is only the beginning..cross your fingers.

If you haven't done so, raise temp to 80F. When I had ich, I bought medication called NOX-ICH.
Ingrediants:
Malachite green 0.75%
Inert Ingredient 99.25%

Either way, after 3 days, my Ich was gone, fish healthy.

Do people know that Malachite green is used in the Chemical cheramic trade!!!!!!!

jefwic...

my temps stay around 80 all the time. (they fluctuate from about 78-82.)...with no heater. so, i'm good there. hmmm....no ich to be seen anywhere in the tank as of now...(knock on wood again)

thanks for all your help guys!

cheers, Angela

My fishies had ick when they first got home and I've been treating them with salt, and still treating them, for 3 weeks now.

All but my Swordtail still has 3 spots clustering together on his tail. Temperature at 80-82F all the time! It's been nearly 2 weeks since I first noticed it. I don't know why?!?!

Is the salt treatment not strong enough for him? I use 1 tablespoon per 18.9 litres.

Hi Feline!

Are you only using Salt as a treatment? I would use a medication especially formulated for the ich. I used Maroxy for 4 days... I do, however, think there are better meds out there... I already had the Maroxy, so that's what I used. Hope he gets better!

Angela

Hi Angela! I think your treatment works very well with ur fishies!

Yup I'm only using salt as treatment coz someone in another forum said it's enough to get rid of those ick! Well, not this time I think.

Right now I'm treating my tank with anti internal bacteria as well, and it's at the end of the treatment. But I'm not sure if adding another treatment of Ick will be okay (I've got one called WS3 by King British - with Malachite Green, Acriflavine, Quinine Sulphate).

I guess I'll wait for another few days and do a water change b4 adding in the WS3 treatment then.
