I have just started treatment for Ich and just wanted to know if I should keep the lights off until it is cleared? Also, should I carry on feeding as normal? I am using Waterlife Protozin.

Only 3 fish have it at the moment. My 2 Blue Rams have only a couple of spots and 1 Tiger Barb has 1 spot. It started yesterday.

Hmm, i don't think lights will make much of a difference, and feeding should be normal.

I'm not an expert on meds, so i can't advise you on if and when to do water changes.

P.T.

Can anyone else advise?

Simple questions, when treating ich, do I feed as normal? keep lights on or off? should I do more water chages?

*bump*

:/

Water changes would dilute the medicine. Read the package and just follow the instructions. I would have recomended doing one huge water change before starting the meds. I've heard that keeping the lights off is better for some reason or another, so thats what I'm doing. Good luck! :/

Raise your temp slowly to 29degC for the duration of their treatment.

That's what I thought, water changes would dilute the meds. Did a 40% change before the treatment. The 1 barb that had 1 spot - this has gone already. Think I caught this really early. Only the blue rams seem to be affected. I will keep the lights off. I suppose this eliminates any possibility mof more stress to make things worse?

Thanks peeps!

Actually, if you need to do a water change durring treatment, it is possible. What you want to do is either do a water change right before you are supposed to re-dose the tank, OR re-treat the amount of water you remove. So if you changed ten gallons, then add a dose of meds that would treat ten gallons.

Good tip! did a water change right before the meds so shouldn't need to do one before end of meds.

Hopefully caught it early enough to kill it off!

Good luck! Are you monitoring your water stats through this?

Thanks! I am monitoring carefully. As of this morning, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 25, temp slowly raising to 84. All other fish are fine and have fed, I have cut back to feeding once every other day to make sure my water stats don't rise.

The tiger barb that has 1 spot - this has now gone. Only the Blue Rams seem to be affected and and they are acting normally too.

I have a 2 day break in the treatment after today so may do a small water change then. Do you think this is a good idea or will I still be diluting them meds?

I wouldn't worry about doing a water change since your stats are good. The main time people worry about doing water changes wile medicating is when they have a mini-cycle while medicating. Your water stats are fine, so i wouldn't worry.
