Ich Treatment

I received an e-mail back from Waterlife today that I thought might be of general interest to anybody using Protozin:

As your pH is over 6.5 you can be a bit more aggressive with the medication as the higher the pH the less toxic the medication is to fish. We would suggest that you increase the dosage by 50%. The easiest way to do this is to treat with the normal dosage every day for the full 6 days. We can only think that your fish have contracted a particularly virulent strain of the disease. Increasing the dosage should sort it out.

My last Cardinal died sometime today whilst I was at work. The other fish have far less spots, maybe only one or two visible on all of those remaining (10), so being day four, I have continued to treat as suggested above and will see how they look tomorrow.

Any further increase in the number of spots though, and I'm binning the Protozin...

I think you're being rather hasty. Even increasing the dose, it may still need two courses. Not everything is as cut and dried as we'd like it to be with treatments.

I use malachite green but I treet for more days than they say to, up to 9 days. So far it has always worked. With malachite green you have to remove carbon from your filter. Many other meds require this. If you didn't remove the carbon that will weaken the effect of some meds. Don T.

Did u do any water changes during this time?

Im using Protozin for mine. Im on day 4 now. Im not bothering with the 1,2,3--6 thing simply because my fish are doing what yours did. Developing more and more spots each day.

The platty's that are in the tank dont have any. But the 4 guppies do. Im going to continue to dose them every day. Partial water change tomorrow - then dose. Then dose on Sunday. Monday Dose. Tuesday Dose. Water Change Before Wednesday Dose. Then, hopefuly i might start to get somewhere.

Though its unlikely as my nitrIte level is something like 1.4! And nitrAte is off the chart. Please see my topic nitrate and nitrite.

Don't do a water change while you're medicating a tank - you'll dilute whatever medication is in there. If one course doesn't do it, start another one.

I was going to change the water before any meds. But as it is i no longer need to worry. Don't have them anymore. The fish i mean. My mate took them to his sick tank.

While i cycle my 60L again!

A few days ago I noticed one of our green tiger barbs had spots. We are treating the aquarium with "NOX-ICH".

Today I notice that the barb, along with the other fish, aren't moving around as much. They are basically just staying in one spot?? And at the top of the tank.

What is going on?

Please, I could use some insight.

Have you got good water movement at your tanks surface?
If you've increased your tanks temp as most whitespot meds require it may be a lack of oxygen....

We are sooooo new at this hobby :(

We have a pump/filter that is for a 50gallon tank on our 25 gallon tank. The flow around the filter is good, there are lots of bubbles.

I don't know :(

I had the temp up for a day & 1/2, but last night I turned it down.

Erm...me neither.
If you can try and increase surface movement by adjusting your filter, the movement at the surface created by your bubbles will increase aeriation but not as much as good water flow.
Or is the filters flow already at the waters surface?
Or, if it was me (not a good recommendation really) i'd put a household fan blowing on to the waters surface, this'll increase the surface movement and therefore the aeriation (i think).
Are you 100% they have ICH and have you checked your water stats nitrite, nitrate, ammonia etc.

Mine did this also, I put it down to less than optimal water parameters. i.e. high temperature, not being able to do water changes, comparatively strong chemicals from the medication. It is pretty much a case of the lesser of two evils, I certainly don't think the cure is worse than the disease. My advice is keep checking for spots, and try to see that they eat.

Thank you! I ran out and bought a stone pump to add into the tank. Now there is definately good movement.

And so far they moving more. I have to run back out - hopefully they are ok and when I get back home they will be even better.

I am 99% positive that the one barb has ICH - definately flashing.

Good luck :good:
Post any changes in their condition and you'll get plenty of help.
Maybe make a new post in emergencies when you get the chance as this is a bit of a hijacked thread (unless of course your the OP, i forget) plus it should get more attention....

Thank you, I will do that too :)
