So my new Cory cats added ich to the tank. I put coppersafe in at 1.5 ppm for 9 days now I brought the temp up to 75F to treat them. I see 2 albinos are losing barbs on one side. I did a 60% wc lowered the temp to 72F. they are all still eatting and seem to be ok. I added some Pimafix and malafix after the wc. I'm going to do another large wc in 3 days and dose with this stuff for 7 days.

Will the barbs grow back I'm pretty sure they got this as a secondry infection to the ich. I have a broken arm but will try my best to clean the tank every 3 days. Thank god for the python I made or I could not do wc.

So will the barbs grow back?????

Ps my substrate is playground sand.

Hi snowflake311 :)

Are you sure your corys have ich? I'm asking this because, while it's possible for them to get it, it's quite unusual. If their barbs are eroding, chances are more likely that they have a bacterial infection.

They were flashing my acara of 1 year started flashing shortly after the new corys were added. I held off treating but the flashing got wost. I was changing the water 30% twice a week before I added the coppersafe.

I think the coppersafe stressed them and so they were weak and became infected.

If I keep the tank very clean will they heal? Will they grow back? They are acting ok. Only 2 of them have this going on.

Hi snowflake311 :)

If the corys regain their health and stamina, the barbels will regrow at least part of the way. If the damage is too severe, they might not. It's a good sign that they can still find their food and eat.

Thanks for the info. I love this site everyone is so helpful.

Hi mate. If their barbles are starting to go like that it must be bacteria. This could be from the sand i'm sure. You really need to keep the sand clean and run your fingers through it to stop bacteria build up. Water changes are good but will do little if the sand is not kept clean.

Iuse the same sand as you and hoover it twice a week and run my fingers through it to stop any nasty gases building up in it. Hope this helps and you corys get back to their best.

I use the gravel vac too and move it throw the sand. All this happened after treating them with coppersafe. These guys are very sensitive to chemicals I think. No more treatments like that. I'm giving them medicated food that they seem to like keeping it all super clean. I have had such bad luck with cory cats in the past. but these guys are little troopers.

thanks.

Sounds like a bacterial infection to me too.

Usually when I find that my corys are flicking, I havn't been keeping up with water changes. A good 80% water change always works, and a good filter clean.

How long have you had the corys for?

I think really you should have treated them in a quarantine tank though as I typed this below first then noticed coppersafe

You can also get some MT snails to help in the sand. They burrow under the sand helping to keep it from compacting and also eat food thats left on the bottom as, they will come to the suface of the sand if they smell food.

A lot of big lfs have big problems with beeing infested with these snails and will give them too you free if you ask very nicley, as i've found out in the past :)

Sorry scrap that you've used coppersafe.

No more meds for them now. I'm just going to keep the tank as clean as I can with my gimpy arm. They are doing ok now with all the treatment out of the water. I had added one random snail to this tank. I have never seen it again since I added it.

I was thinking of getting some of thoes pest snails for my 55 gal I had some in there too but once I added fish I never saw them again.

I have had them for a month now. The tank is 4 months old.

BEst of luck with them hope they recover really successful soon, it is amazing what crystal clean water can do to help recover fish back to their normal selves.

Update:

they are doing well acting normal eatting and swimming around. The barbs are not getting shorter so maybe they are healing. These fish are so sensitive to medication I read they were but did not know it was this bad.

Update:

I can clearly see the barbs are growing back. woohoo.
