Ich and Fin Rot

I don't *think* so, but I believe there are Marcel meds that you can use together safely. Good luck.

affrimative. ich is caused by parasites, whereas fin/tail rot is a bacterial disease. mardel puts out meds for both. there is no "one cure" for these two issues, sorry!

There were these two large cichlids (not sure of which ones they were as they were in the "large asst. cichlid tank") and they were upside down and had white spots all over them. Their scales were sticking out and they looked really ill. I wanted to do something for them but I wasn't working in the fish dept and couldn't do anything but tell them about it. I don't think they did anything about it. :-(

Ich can damage the fins of fish without them having fin rot. Fin rot could set in as a secondary infection following Ich, you need to be sure that the fins have not been damaged by Ich only, and that they do indeed have fin rot, before you medicate for both.

I have used Esha Exit for Ich, which can be used in conjunction with Esha 2000. These meds together will treat Ich, velvet, fungus, finrot and bacterial infections. They will also help heal wounds, ulcers and gill problems.

I have not heard of an all in one medication, and you need to be very careful that multiple medicines are compatible. Some require you wait a period of time and perform large daily water changes whilst filtering over carbon before starting a new med.

The Esha products are biodegradable, needing no carbon to remove them following treatment, and these particular two products can be used together. They are also safe for scaleless fish and will not harm the bacteria in your filter.

If it is fin damage following Ich, and not fin rot, you could use Melafix to help heal the fins. Melafix will not teat any bacterial/fungul infection, though, only help repair the damage.

Note: The Esha product (Esha 2000) is cheaper than Melafix and will treat as well as repair.

I recently had a gup with fin rot and some fungus is my 20g (due to my freakin faulty heaters) well I had an accident with an air stone hose. I had unplugged the air stone from the air pump cause there was too much circulation . Well I come back a few hours later and half the tank is drained (hose acted like a siphon) I freaked out and started running around like a nut. I filled the tank back up (with conditioner and at the right temp). Well idiot does it again two days later and I find 30% of water drained from my tank. So I fill it back up. Then did another water change this weekend as part of my normal routine. Moral of the story? The fungus and fin rot went away on its own by these forced water changes. My living room did smell like mildew for a couple of days. :)

Melafix can treat these 2 illnesses. It is excellent and not harmful to the rest of the fish and you're tanks filter. it is 100% natural. I have used it for fin rot and fungual infections with total success.

It is tea tree oil, which has excellent anti bacterial properties. Go get some today.

Also I'd recommend getting a small hospital tank, 10 litres or so, they are very cheap, but dont forget to cycle it before using it.

Melafix wont help with ick but it is great for fin rot. I know that no one else has experienced this but it was melafix that killed off my good bacteria. It always does. Why this only happens to my tanks who knows. I never add antibacterials to my main tanks any more. Just keep your eye on your water specs. Also, I can’t remember if it was wuv or not but someone suggested colloidal silver. I used that in my tank and had good results.

then if melafix treats ick it is an anti-parasitic as well as an anti-bacterial. As far as I've ever heard about tea tree oil it doesn't have any affect on parasites.
