Sorry in advanced, this must of been asked loads before. But i am buying a 120l tank within the next few days, i would like to make a marine tank. But i have a few questions, as when i have asked people about help, they seem to give wrong advise, even i know that dont have a clue lol

1) for marine, What salt is needed? does filters have to be different brand?
2) Any tips on keeping coral? i heard its very hard, (not sure if its true)
3) Would a 120l be a good size for a marine fish tank?

Sorry about the noobish questions, i am totally new to this side of fish!
thanks for the help and once again sorry to be a pain

:good:

for marine, What salt is needed? does filters have to be different brand?

There packaged salts that have minerals in the salt mix themselves that help keep water chemistry on a baseline... usually for a large colony of corals though, more chemicals are needed from buffer solutions to keep water chemistry consistant. Filtering is usually done by the lr that you would buy if doing a fowlr (fish only with live rock) or a reef. If you do fo (fish only) then you would use an external filter and I believe the medias would be much the same.

Any tips on keeping coral? i heard its very hard, (not sure if its true)

Some corals are very sensitive and require spot feeding and high amounts of minerals in the water to grow. But there are plenty that require just a good light and maybe the occasional broadcast feed of baby brine or phytoplankton for health. They still require atleast consistant water stats, but after the first few months, and asking lots of questions on TFF, you should start to get the feel for keeping water chemistry consistant.

Would a 120l be a good size for a marine fish tank?

This is a decent size to start with as it's about 30USG. This allows for ample water volume while not getting too overwhelming. There are plenty of fish that can go in this size tank as well :good:

Ox has some great advice there. I have just two more suggestions for you. Have a browse through a major online retailer like liveaquaria.com just so you can see what kinds of fish/corals/inverts are out there and get some idea of what livestock you want to keep. In the end your livestock decisions will dictate your chosen hardware and maintenance needs. You can go from really easy to really hard things on the marine side of the hobby, all depends on what you like and what you're willing to work for.

Second, have a read through the stickies atop this section, will help get your knowledge goin. Don't be afraid to ask questions about something you read up there that confuses you, we're here to help :)
