I am going to be starting a marine tank and i think it is going 2 be a 120 gallon tank i already am going to make a stand for it
I was wondering if anyone could give me an approicmate cost of the tank not includeing fish and live rocks and other living stuff. But like the tank, filterration, protein skimmer and other stuff like that any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Jeff

Well, I think you SHOULD factor in the live rock considering it will be the bulk of your filtration.....120lbs minimum @ 6-8 bucks a lb is gonna be alot of your cost....
as for basic cost.....it will not cost much more than a really good tropical setup....except for a sump if you plan on that....lights will cost ya too....agronite for a 120 will be costly as well......just make sure you do it right in the first place and replacement costs will be null....always costs more to fix mistakes than to do it right in the first place!!! Good luck....and don't overlook the live rock!!!

It depends a lot on what type of filter you're planning to get. You should probably get a book and read up on it.

Protein skimmers vary in price, I got mine for $100.

well it depends on what set up your having

sps softies etc

sps will require halides will cost you about 600 pounds for that size tank
cos you will need twin 250s or somthink linke that maybe more power
skimmer you would be looking at a deltec apf600 there about 250 pounds
salt you will be better buying a bucket at about 50 pounds
sump can cost you as little as 20 pounds to make 1 your self
then theres your live rock you will need at least 60kg that will cost about
600 pounds
pumps to pump your water back up to main tank about 80 pounds
sand will cost about 30 pounds if you use live sand about 100 pounds
then theres little things like heaters powerheads stands etc

that come up to 1730.00pounds

i have spent about 2500 pounds on my 90 gallon tank

saw bare that in mind it can cst from as litlle as 400 pounds if u just bodge 1 up
if you are gonna do a realy good set up reeftank etc i would look at about 3000
pounds for that set up alot of people will disagree but thats up to them
this includes lots of things im talking about a very good system alot of people who
i know would say a lot more money

cheers ritchie

Get the AquaClear Pro 150 with skimmer build in. Should be around $300 to $350

Why doesn't anyone build there own tank anymore If you are going to build your own stand why not just go out and buy the glass and aquarium sillicon. 60 years ago everyone built there own tank so It can't be that hard. That and you really don't want to skimp out on the live rock. What you save on live rock you are lible to lose on dead fish.

Opcn

P.S. You can easily mix live sand with crushed argonite in a 50:50 mixture It's more effective than just plain crushed argonite and cheeper that all live sand.

I think that a lot of people don't build their own tank anymore just because it's too much work. It's a lot quicker to go out and purchase one.

LOL, :fish:

Anyone paying $6-$8 for live rock is getting ripped off. Anyone buying 120lbs of fully cured live rock is being silly IMO.

You don't indicate where you are from so I will not give advice on where to buy. But as I mention in other threads here, buy a bunch of base rock. Can even be dry. That'll be like $1 a pound. Then strategically place a few large, nice, really live rocks with pods, worms and lots of coralline on it. Things will blossom in a couple weeks and while you are waiting to add more critters.

If in the US somewhere you should be able to pick up loads of great rock cheap from others who are selling their setups or downsizing on reefcentral.

Ostrow has spoken with wise advice.

You can buy a 120 ready to plug and play for somewhere around a thousand bucks used if you keep on the alert.

A guy on RC just last week in Detroit sold a 125gal tank and stand in 15 minutes, for the astounding price of 50.00 !!!! It had to go.

Thanks GL!

How are things going? Haven't seen you around in a while! You still have a move ... to Arizona was it? ... in the works?

Hi Oz, I am here in Mi for the winter. The move fell through, and I am desparately trying to get ready for winter. Snow and winter can be a big deal up here, and we aren't fully prepared due to the fact that we thought we were moving.
