I only have these two mollies, along with 8 platties and 5 tiger barbs. Everyone plays nice, the species seem to separate into their own neighborhoods, at feeding time they all gather at the source and there is no noticeable fighting.

The platties made short work of the first platy fry brood that came along two weeks past, there were only 2 that I could find and those only lasted a couple days. I don't like the breeder traps, so I let nature take its course in the tank and allow for free birth. I have built up lots of good hiding spots that the bigger fish can not get to and moss growth is improving daily so they can hide/feed there too.

Trying to convince the wife to allow me to start a breeder tank (have a spare unused 3 gal), but she is hesitant to let me... she knows that if I have 2 tanks going, that 2 will turn into 5 tanks in a short amount of time

Excellent. Let us know how the fry do once they're here!

If you just keep livebearers you can rear the fry along side the adults very easily.
Your tiger barbs are whats eating the fry.

Not necessarily true. It takes some care and planning to rear the fry with the adults, otherwise the livebearers will gladly eat the fry as fast as the barbs would.

Actually like that only the strong will survive, not getting rid of the barbs they are the kids favorites. Besides if too many survive then my tank will be horribly overstocked, instead of moderately overstocked as it is now.
