I think I have found a female for my male acara (the one we had the saga of acara vs GT a few threads down!)

She (I hope!) is still very small and was pretty battered in the tank she was in. She is the size of a ram at the moment (and actually my female ram is becoming her new best friend, very cute to watch them swimming together!) and so far my male has shown no interest (I was concerned he might kill her, being so small).

Her dorsal is rounded and she had a plumper in shape body than the others in the tank so I hope I got it right. She shows white edging on her dorsal rather than the yellow shown by my male.

Anyone agree this is a female?

With the ram (couldnt get a clear one):

With the male - we've got a lot of growing to do!

Looks to young to tell. Do you have a side shot of the one you think is male? Because in that last photo it looks like a female.

THAT'S NOT AN ACARA

THAT'S A GREEN TERROR

ACARAS DON'T EXIST THEY'RE ALL GREEN TERRORS SO YOU CAN'T HAVE ONE

But really, I'd have to agree it's a bit too young to tell. Cichlids all seem nearly impossible to sex (unless they're convicts or something) until they're decently sized.

What are you talking about? you are kidding right?

Green terrors are very similar to acaras in fact they are both in the genus Aequidens.

Those are blue acaras. The young one has silver tips The common blue acara has the orange tips like your larger one.

I'm kidding, pretty much every single post I've seen of somebody saying they got an acara leads to everyone saying "no you don't" so I wanted to keep the tradition going

LOL @ onidrase!!!

Yes I know she's only little, but there were around five of them in the tank and she really had a rounder body tan the others who were more long and slender so I tried my best with what I could see,

Snowflake - there's a whole thread full of pics, more in a post further in the thread on this page about halfway down called 'my new blue acara'. It is also full of the schenanigans that onidrase is referring to!
