i phoned a local lfs today and asked thema few questions and i think the reason 10 of my fish died on the weekend was because there was carbon in my filter i didnt know about and it basically leaked all the things it had absorbed into the water.

i wont be using those medias again.

is carbon necessary?

yeah i do, stats were fine. if you look for my other post it will show everything that happened yesterday

the carbon must have been 3 months old

ok, well it defo wasnt carbon btw.

Carbon does have a life span apparently. If carbon has soaked in whatever it was removing it is possible for it to leech back some of whatever it removed back into the water once it is expired. I know jack about this but have read it many times over I'm sure an expert will back up soon.

no it isnt harmful!- it is pretty useless after about 3-4 weeks, but after about 2-3 days of it being in it has really used up most of the carbon in it. it isnt harmful full stop!

carbon dosent have a memory the science behind it would surely mean that once a chemical reaction has taken place it cannot be reversed eg baking a cake putting it in a fridge will not give you milk eggs and butter back again.

there is a reaction, the carbon binds, the toxic substance, but it can be reversed

Carbon releaseing something it has absorbed is highly unlikely,in fact unless some other chemical got into your tank to cause a reaction that would release something eles from the carbon it wouldn't ever happen.
Jazzz's Cake analogy is correct.

then explain to me why it is capable of releasing phosphate into a tank

carbon phosphorate + water = carbondioxide + hydrogenPhosphorate + hydrogen

CHPO4 + 2H2O = CO2 +HPO4 + 2H2

Believe this is it but I am no chemist

With the correct catalysts or a decent temperature (tropical will proberbly do it) the binding reactions will proberbly be reversable, i.e. not like baking a cake but like makeing an ice lolly

the cake example uses heat for the reaction.

heat in a tank and i amde the analagy up its not a scientific secret i am not a chemist but i do have some grasp on the area
