I think I electrocuted allmost all my fish?

It prolly has something to do with them touching the substrate and sort of being grounded. No idea about the floating sand though buddy lol.

Sorry to hear that.

The same happened to me once. I was trying to catch a Marble Hatchet that had jumped into the box filter so I took out the heater and forgot to turn it off. When I eventually returned the fish to its tank and put the heater back in it fizzled and banged. I pulled it out half way and it seemed fine so put it back. Three days later the tank temp seemed abit low so I pulled the heater out to find only a wire. After hours of trying to get the rest out I had to pull the whole filter of the tank to find broken glass etc. Luckily the fish were fine.

might be, the sand seems to have sunk again for the most part, I still got some floating sand though.

I went and got 2 guppy fry, they are about 5mm long, and Ican see a hint of color on one, but the otehr one ist still see thru.

So now I need to find some more fish, I like more little colorful ones more hten bigger fish.

I doubt the sand would be affected by the electric discharge, but I've heard of stranger things happening. Maybe the move unsettled loose particles. The only other suggestion is that the floaters might really be something from the heater if it broke. I don't know what the composition on the inside of a heater is :/

And very sorry to hear about your loss. 3 yrs is a good life tho - those fish were better with you than in an overcrowded "ignorance" tank.

Thanks, its good to hear and know that, I thought they all lived a real long life. the neons were huge too, biggests ones I ever saw, they never did bread though?

I thought it was part of the heater, but they didnt start floating till I way taking the sand out of that corner to make sure there was no glass in the tank.
At first i just thouhgt it was little air bubbles that were kinda attached to the sand or under the sand. (my neons liked to make bubbles in teh sand?)

I would buy a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) this will prevent that from happening again and also will trip the second it senses water. I worked as an electrician for 11 years before I made a career change. I have them on mine and prevented a disaster you have described. What probably happened is somehow the water came in contact with the heater element and grounded out. The gfci is in either breaker or plug form. I recomend putting the breaker in, but either will help prevent future problems. If you arent sure how to do this or feel uncomfortable, please call a qualified electrician.

Thanks, I actually put in a new wall socket, to one like the bathrooms have.
I'm surprised it didnt flip sooner, my house is only a few years old, arent they supposed to flip faster then that?

The ground leak/fault types are very very sensitive, technically they can prevent electricution should you be well earthed and happen to touch a live wire on a circuit with this protection. Maybe your socket was just a breaker socket.

The corys werent affected beacuse they dont have scales. they only will respond to electricution at lower volts.

from doing work with the missouri conservation ive had lots offish shocking experience, we have to use 2 different units to shock. one high volt for any fish with scales, and the low volt to make the catfish float to the top.

just a piece of info.

But I think I want more variety.
I saw some at the lfs when getting a new heater that were like 3" long thin like a pencil, and liked the sand, they were black and orange.
I'd like to first know what they are (they said they jsut got htem in today and he didnt know what they were) and how well they will work with a comunity tank (they are for sale in a 8 days. I have 3 on hold for then.

This them?

Thats exactly them, after reading it I'm going to phone tomorrow and take all 10 of them.

I'm also going to by building a new tank, it will be 24" long, 50" long, and 23" tall.
I think thats about 450L (100 gallons??)
Might be 3 or 4 months though.

I worry about fish electrocution but my Cra*ppy Juwel heater is made of some plasticy stuff so it can't get broken but my other two are worrying ;/ I'm really sorry about that but your lucky it wasnt you who was floating at the top instead of the fish!!

I know, I was thinking about that after, and I was JUST ABOUT to stick my hand in to stick the cups onto the glass too.

Oh well a few more days and I get some new fishes, I hope they fill the void.
