So, I finally got around and made the DIY dark blue background I've been wanting so my fish stand out more... then I decided to take a picture and now all I get is a big flash at the back... so... how do you take pictures when your tank has a dark background??

You got the flash turned off on the camera? If so, is there an external source of light shining on the tank?

If I turn off the flash my pictures end up being blurs (the fish anyway), if I leave the flash on the fish are in focus but there is a flash on the background. (I don't have a fancy camera).

You need to turn the flash off and pan with the fish moving, ie move camera to keep fish in the middle of the picture. This way when take it, the background will be blurry and the fish in focus. I do a lot of airshows photography and this is the way to picture a moving object.

Keeping the flash on will just reflect light off the glass panes.

You could also try experimenting with macro function for close work or change the focus (if you can on your camera) to infinity. This stop it focusing on dirt etc on the front pane.

Failing the above, a tripod would help for stability.

Turn off your flash and have a play around with the manual settings

Oh and almost forgot, you can increase the shutter speed for moving objects to get a crisper shot. Most basic cameras also have this setting now a days.

yeah your flash needs to be off and try use the lights from your hood. faster moving fish wil usually be blurry but the slower ones usually take some time to stop moving around so much and that's when i click. usually multiple tries gets one or two good shots.

I've not tried following the fish before, will try that!

I think I might need to pull out my manual and see what the infinity setting is.... my camera DOES tend to choose random things in the center quite often.

Definietely need my manual out... no idea about shutter speed either!

Thanks!
