What background would do best for this set-up. I dont want to paint the back either.

A completely black background, But i always say that when background threads come up lol.

I love black backgrounds and have all my tanks backs painted black.

he's right, black backgrounds look good on most tanks. They don't work if you have black fish but for most other fish they are great.
I use black or blue card from a stationary shop. Just sticky tape it to the outside.
