I have a hydrometer n i have never compared it to anything accurate, i just go by how everything is acting, so on the hydrometer it reads 1.025 usually at 80 degrees, and everything does fine when it's at that. But I got a top up system and i didn't realize I have soo much evaporation in my tank and over the past week it brought my salinity down to 1.020 and I have been slowly puting only saltwater back in to try and get it up without making my urchins unhappy, my pincushin dropped all his spiked and Iv'e gotten the sg back to 1.021 which isn't much of a difference at all but I'm getting there lol. and now he's doing fine.. Today I'm gonna try to get it up atleast to 1.022 and then tomorow 1.023 and so on, as long as it's 24 hours before the increase in another 0.001 ... but I think another problem is that my skimmer messed up my tank becuase as you know it's a free running tank w/ just water movement from the powerheads. And when I put this new skimmer on it seemed to mess everything up withing 3 days and my calcium is down now, so I turned it off and things seem to be doing better again, so I'm not sure If I should use the thing. It's a Rio nano skimmer... It does a great job, but maybe too good. Anywheys Input would b great. I just thought that when fish have trouble ******* that it's usually associated with a water quality problem, and I don't need bad water since I have alot of delicate things in my tank. So Maybe if I get my sg back up things will be better, and add calcium.
