im from Oregon good sir
so i just bought (other than my betta ive had for two weeks in his own tank) my first few fish; 1 male dalmation lyretail molly, 1 female silver molly, and 2 otto's... and i let the petstore bag float in my 10g for about 40 minutes, and then i put the fish in the tank... with the water they came in... completely forgetting that i read to not put that water in... what do i do? is this bad?

Nothing you can do now. Just hope for the best.

For info, floating the bag does not really acclimatise the fish. All that will do is equalise temperature, and that is only part of acclimatisation.

What to do is open the bag and pour a small amount of tank water in, leave for 5-10 mins, pour another small amount of tank water in, wait 5-10 mins............................

Repeat until the majority of the water in the bag is tank water. This slowly gets the fish used to the water in your tank (acclimitisation). Once you have done this, net the fish and into the tank. Wala!

well i already knew the bag float was just for the temperature... the petstore's water was a several degrees higher than mine is, the only reason i had it float so long was cause i was watching a movie, but i was right next to em... but petstore's take care of their tanks, so why is it that we're not supposed to mix the water? will it hurt my new buddies?

the reason is to get the fish used to your water parameters. what i do is float the bag and pour one shot glass of water in about every 5-10 minutes for about 45 minutes. there are a few reasons not to pour the lfs water in your tank, you don't know what kind of nasties are in there and the fact that there have been stressed out fish in a very small amount of water for a long while.I lost one out of the last 25 tetra's i've added over the last few months doing this method. I think for giggles next time i get some fish i'll test the water to see how nasty it gets.

ok, so next time i will fer sher do what you guys said... about the little bits of my water in the bag at a time... but hey, i ******* love my otto's... they are soo awesome, i want more... like several more... they remind me of tiny reef sharks, which are my favorite animal...

hey on a side note, dilution is the solution to the pollution... is that an actual saying people use? ive only heard it once... last night... in a movie i was watching... just wondering

"Dilution is the solution to pollution" is very descriptive of why we aquarists do water changes.

Anyone who keeps fish 'should' be able to relate closely to that phrase.

picked this phrase up from a LFS guy who was telling us about his 75g SW with a 75g refuge back when me and my buddy were 1st getting into this fish thing.

Hi SunnySeth,

I've had to edit the title of this thread. In the future, please watch your language.

It's usually not a good idea to float a bag if you can avoid it. Your tank is new and clean, but you never know what strains of bacteria you are introducing both from the water (if you pour it in) and /or the bag, if you float it. It's better not to take the chance.
