I don't know wether this is a silly question but ... is the bacteria that grows in a pond's filter the same as in a fish tank's ? because im not desperate, but a little 'mature media' for my tank wouldn't go a miss and my neighbour has had fish in his pond for well over a year now so his filter must be quite mature ...

Yep, same thing.

I would just make sure you rinse it out with some pond water, and get any grime and nasties off! If you use any tap water though, then the Bacteria die.

I would be very careful of bringing in something from a pond. It could also contain other nasties that you don't want. Also, depending on the type filter he has and what type media is in it, it could likely contain algae organisms which you don't want. It may work out fine since the bacteria are indeed the same but there is an element of risk of what else could be in it.

Reading the replies as I was interested in an answer too.

As with most things in life, for every plus there seems to be a minus......it's a gamble

Personally, I think a gamble taken over patience is the wrong path

A tank cycled in time with the proper matured media or from scratch is better than a quickly cycled tank with harmfull stuff lurking just waiting to kill or harm your new stock

Hey! your choice though!

I myself would be very cautious, just for the fact that the pond is outdoors. There could be a variety of organisms that grow outside that us indoor fishkeepers know nothing about. Snails for one could be a massive problem. Algae as always could probably be your biggest threat. I would stay clear and just go through a fishless cycle.

Avoiding the risk could save you days, if not weeks in the future!!!! (please ignore my signature for this post LOL)!!!

ok, well after talking to my neighnour, ive changed my mind. As soon as he told me he'd had a thew problems with some sort of parasite, i was put off !! Id rather be safe than sorry. Besides, after thinking about it properly, as you guys say, its a gamble taking from a pond to a tank, you just dont know what nasties are lurking about !!

I've actually used my outdoor pond for soaking wood, and occationally rock, and while it might be backwards, I seeded my outdoor ponds first filter with foam from my fish tank.

So far the only problem I have is several years ago I developed a small fuzzy 'plant' that spreads so annoyingly that a tank full of cichlids hasn't been able to wipe it out.

not to hijack this thread, but what about media from my saltwater tank? I'm not having much luck finding any media...

I believe in saltwater you are sealing with a different form of bacterias.... but as I still havent finished filling my saltwater tank to even start it... I am not the best person to ask.

salt and fresh have differnt types of bacteria that do the same thing. So no.
