It's best to find fish that suit your Ph rather than alter your Ph. For a long time i altered my Ph but i had a bad experience with proper Ph (whereby it made the surface of the water look like it had clingfilm layed over it). I decided enough was enough and from that day forth i stopped altering my Ph. Of course this has to be done carefully as to not kill your fish with Ph shock. Now my fish are happy in my tapwater which is around 7.5 and to be honest most fish shops don't alter their Ph. If you ask at your LFS what their Ph is then its more than likely to be the same that comes out of the tap.
Well thats my opinion anyway!
