I just done a weekly w/c on the 55 gal tank ,on re-filling there was a very loud cracking sound

Now i'm concerned the tank has cracked on the bottom, but no sign of water yet....

I'm sure the bottom is double glass with polysterene in the middle part.

Do you think i need to be concerned??

I don't think I'd get a wink of sleep tonight if that happened to me!

I'm worried sick now, thinking i may find 55 gals on the floor in the morning with my beloved fish flapping around in a few inches of water

Have to agree. I'd end up draining the tank just to check. Effort! But I'd rather that than wake up thinking I'm in the middle of that hurricane and waters being splashed round everywhere! :\

Any chance it could be the corydoras or any tankmates? Synodontis catfish can make some crazily loud noises (hence the common "squeaker" name given) when getting angry/stressed. This saved the life of one of my Upside Down Catfish who squeaked at after accidentally coming out attached to a piece of bogwood, when it had been placed in a fish bucket without water for some minutes!

do you have a support bar that runs across the middle of the tank stand? these are usually very flimsy and crack easily

Did you perhaps leave your heater plugged in when you did tha w/c? Heaters make some very odd noises if they switch on while out of water....

A few years back, when I was changing the water on my coldwater tank I heard a crack but could not see anything, no water leaking and thought I was imagining things, a few hours later watching tv, I heard another crack and that was it, water going everywhere. It was only a 60 litre and I managed to get my fish in a bucket and get to the shop and get a new one as it went during the day. As said above drain it and have a real good look. hopefully you will be ok but best to be safe than sorry. good luck

+1 on ColdCazzie's heater comment, when glass goes under sudden temperature changes it will more than likely crack. I highly doubt the base has cracked.

Thanks all :good:

Well no sign of water...(touch wood)

It could possibly have been the heater,i did leave in plugged in,its quite low down in the water, but i did get carried away with the w/c today and its more than likely may have been exposed for a short time

It appears to be working still,i'm just praying it will all be ok...

Sometimes lights make a hell of a 'cracking' noise if they've been on for a while too (like some older TVs when they cool down).

I too think its the heater

turn it off leave it to cool and check it dont just hope and pray

Definately check the heater. Unplug it right away. Wait for 20 minutes for it to cool. Take it out and check it for cracks. Wouldn't want you get zapped during your next water change.
