unless you clean out the entire tank and add new water but that would stress the fish out a lot. stressed fish are more prone to disease and bacteria. There are a lot of choices for fish that can live in your tank still. i have a cory cat in mine and it is fine. it cleans the bottom and goes on like normal. i have also had snails but you want to make sure it isnt touched directly by the salt crystal.

HAVE FUN CHOOSING. :D

Ok dont think i will risk it - i will carry on with the salt - I was GIVEN 3 males and a female although they seem ok together - although was bit annoyed with fish shop to give me this ratio - i have since read it should have been the other way round! So when I next addd fish to my tank do you think I should get another female? Also what other choices of fish would you recommend. I like the other livebearers but are there any other choices not in the livebearer species that would like salted water? Sorry for so many questions but I am a newbie! Thanks

i would call up the shop and find out if u could get 2 males exchanged for females and then you should have 1 male and 3 females if i counted right.....as far as i know platies, guppies, and swords dont mind a little salt but im not totaly sure on that....like me and annastasia have said just do regular partials and eventually the salt level will go down and you can get more fish

the fish sound to be doing good :D good luck with them

I dont feel I can take 2 back - i love them all! And would that not stress them out? To be honest they are not hassling the 1 female - the 3 males do occasionally chase each other but that is usually at feeding time. But do I get more females? I dont want hundreds of babies - only a 24 gallon tank!

Could you bear to take the female back, and just keep the males? That seems like the best idea, given the situation. That way you can avoid a ton of fry, and overstocking...

you can always sell them or give them away. but sometimes u just have to get a group of compadible males. but most of the time they will be like the 3 stooges.

Are you worried about them hassling her then? or are there any other reasons I should follow this advice? I am getting all worried now :(

Yes, I am. They could eventually start really wanting to breed with her, and stress her out very much. A stressed out fish isn't a happy one, and they can be more prone to disease. I think for the sake of her, take her back, or get more females.

the males could kill one or the other by territory reasons

Very true. You don't want your males fighting over a girl, and killing each other. Though she is more likely to get stressed then this happening...but it's still a possibility.

I never new I would get so attached to a fish - realise am being a bit of sad case but I am sure as another fish lover you understand. What a dilemma - so if I got 2 more females would that solve the hassling problem but then run the risk of having babies galore?

if u dont fry then you would be best off getting rid of the female. as the others have said she will get too stressed out from the males. if u dont mind the fry then you would need to get atleast 5 more females but that would leave the tank very filled up.
