Ok, last night I washed out the sand I had bought from B&Q, and slowly added it into my 180L. I turned the filter on once it had settled, but the water was cloudy. I know this would happen because no matter how much you wash it, it will dirty the water.

It has been on around 14 hours now, and the water is still really cloudy, but you can see a difference from last night, to this afternoon. Can anyone tell me how long the water is likely to stay cloudy for? Currently, you can't see the back of the tank due to the cloudiness of the water.

Well when I first added mine I had absloutely not cloudliness at all. Before adding it to your tank your supposed to wash it in cold water just to clean it off a little. I bought some special sand that is weighted so none of it floats and you can use a gravel vaccum on it.

I rinsed mine throughly and it sunk to the bottom straight away. I bought the cheaper stuff from B&Q (two 15KG bags). Well its clearing quickly now, in the 3 hours I have been out there has been a vast improvement. I estimate by monday morning it should be completely clear! :)

It's really hard to say how long it will take. When I put play sand in my first tank, it was still so bad after a week that I couldn't see the back of the tank. I did a 90% water change and it was fine. Do you have fish in the tank yet? If not and the tank is a new set up, just do a big water change. Be sure when you add the water back that you pour it over a cup, plate or decoration rather than pouring it directly into the sand, disturbing and stirring it up.

No fish in tank, its currently cycling. :) After just 24 hours of being in the tank a big improvment has been made. You can see the back of the tank now, and everything is clearing up nicely. I think it will be ok without a water change, but ill keep an eye on it. ;)
