AAARRGGHHH!!!! I was at Wal Mart today (bleh... ), and I went to the fish department mostly to make sure no jerk had put any bettas together to see them fight (that happens now and then, so I usually check them each time I find myself in Wal Mart), I noticed that they had a tank of green pufferfish (I want to say figure 8's?). There had to have been at least 15 of them together in one tiny tank, and they all had ragged fins to some extent, but the smallest few were sitting on the bottom of the tank with NO fins! Well, they had little nubs for thier side fins, flapping wildly, trying to stay upright, but the tails, top fins, and bottom fins were COMPLETELY chewed off! :-( Those poor fish. I wanted to buy all the little ones and either try to let them recover (I don't think they could?) or at the very least, put them out of thier misery. Those poor, poor fish. :-(

Sorry, I know we have these threads all the time, but this upset me so much I just had to post. I have seen terrible conditions at LFS's before, but I have to say this was the worst.

I wanted to complain to a manager or something, but my dad was with me and he would get angry at me. :/

I wanted so bad to do something for those poor fish, but buying them would just perpetuate the problem, wouldn't it? :(

Yea buying them would make it worse because you would be supporting the wal-mart. However you could maybe ask for some sort of lower price or "deal" because they are in such poor condition. Those fish were probably in that condition because they only get fed about once every two weeks. This is at least what the wal-mart near me does. So it's like no wonder the fish look weak, and are sick and aren't feeling well. They don't have the strength to do anything. So whether or not you choose to save them and resell them or what ever you choose, wal-mart will always sell fish until something major goes wrong....can't believe they got puffers now though...

UGH.... I'm so glad the 2 Walmarts near here have gotten rid of all of their fish. It was nauseating to even walk by the section when there were still fish.
It always had that extremely pungeant fish smell and all of the tanks were filthy.
Don't even get me started on the poor dead bettas rotting away in their cups.
Just bleh...... just glad don't have to worry about that any more.

Next time you see something like that, I would complain. Complain enough and maybe something will get done... doubtful since there will always be the ignorant that will buy their fish no matter what conditon they're in.... but at least you can say you tried ya know.

You know, I always wonder when these threads come up - if you hate Wal-Mart so much, why are you shopping there?

I've never bought a single thing at a Wal-Mart, and think I've probably been inside one less than 5 times in my life. I would never, ever think to buy fish there, considering - well - absolutely everything else about them sucks, why would they be good at keeping lve fish.

contradiction in itself

its people that buy bad fish that fuel the poor conditions as the company will see them sell in whatever condition they are in so they wont give a damn. what makes me mad about walmart are the customers that complain but STILL rescue their fish and make things worse.

People will do what they want, so it never hurts to make suggestions anyways!!!!

i hate going into pet stores and seeing the fish in poor conditions too. What really gets me is walking into pets at home to see some one buying a tank, a bag full of fish and all the water treatments, heater, filter ect :X :X

when/if im in there im always telling customers better advise than the gimp selling the fish like the other day some one walked in going "ooo i want one of those fish" pointing at a clownloach they were asking they guy questions about them like were they compatible ect but not once did he mention they grow huge, should be in groups or are meat eaters! so i butt in and they thanked me and decided not to buy one :good: the guy who works there looked annoyed but i was happy :D

it happens now and then the pet stores are horrible. i try to stick with small shops or atleast one that knows alot about fish.

Maybe its because I am a teenager living at home, and I can't really control where my parents choose to shop, you think?? I can't very well convince my dad to go to 8 different stores and spend twice as much, as crazy as it sounds, he just refuses to do it.

None of the Wallmarts near my house don't have any fish sections (thank God!), but unforunetally, the Petco's do. Whenever I walk past there, they have a small (I'd have to say 15 gallons) tank that has to have at least forty goldfish in it, the smallest of which are about 3 inches long. So there are dozens of goldfish swimming around in their pee and crap (tank has no filtration whatsoever), and there's probably twice the amount of dead fish in there then there are living ones! It's terrible.
Those major pet stores and other stores that shouldn't sell fish suck.
Cheers,
GobyMaster

Well, I wouldn't know that from your fake birthday!

Honestly, when I was in college, my mother tried to buy a few things for me at Wal-Mart, and I just refused them outright.

If you really would like them to stop buying for you there, I suggest you get them to watch this movie.

 I don't recall ever posting a birthday here, fake or otherwise. Thats weird. :sly: It's fixed now, though. :fun:

That sucks! I always feel so bad for the bettas at the walmart near me.

I understand about the parents thing, though. Before I got my license and before Petsmart went in, my mom wouldn't want to drive farther to the pet store that doesn't sell puppies, so we'd often go to the one that does sell puppies. But not anymore! Haven't set foot in the place since Petsmart opened. Luckily, though, my parents hate Walmart.

I know what you mean, I've despised walmart for a long time but since I got into aquarium-ing and discovered what they do to their fish  I hate them even more. I've even been tempted to steal the bettas in order to give them a decent home, but I have no place to put them and that doesn't really seem right.

However a harmless thing you could do to protest would be to put fliers about fishless cycling and proper stocking and maintenance in the fish section. A far more amusing method of protest would be to go to one of the phones and press the I button(for intercom) and say something along the lines of, "Would an employee go go to the fish section and remove the corpses  "
