Why would you want to run an overflow if your tank is drilled. Overflows are used for tanks that are not drilled to carry the water over the back if i'm not mistaken. Overflows also tend to be quite expensive £60+ from what i've seen where as a wier will run you about £5-10 if you make it out of glass, maybe a little more for acrylic. The wier in your case with holes at the top would be there to stop critters getting into pipe work. Lots of people use B and Q piping in reefs just google it. My sump has been a lot of work and a reasonable amount of cash to setup but the flip side is i'm hoping it will save me Stress, money and water changes in the future. I look at it as paying up front now to not have to pay later. It's possible that the guy at the LFS was just trying to make a profit not neccesarily trying to help you but i could be wrong.
