I hate pet stores sometimes

there isnt an actual true lfs thats within 45 minutes from me and since i know my mom wont drive me that far i stick with petsmart. its only been open for around a year and so far its a good store, but it would be nice to have more of a selection to shop at.

All I know is that it's best to stick with one supplier. If you trust this lfs then you should keep going there. If a new fish that you add messes up the entire tank or is sick, then you know where to go to complain, too ;). (Though that's what receipts are for :D)

It seems that our local Petco has cleaned up it's act. When we first went in there a few months ago the tanks had some dead fish and the bettas were kept in these teeny tiny little 1/2-cup containers. Now the tanks look clean with rarely a dead fish in them and they even have their bettas in larger cups now and they all look pretty healthy. The last two african cichlids I bought from Petco and I have had good luck with them even though one of them had some nipped fins (I felt sorry for it and bought it). Now it's fins are almost completely healed and he's such a clown and fun to watch :p .

Annastasia... thanks for your comment.

A little off topic... is that your betta? It's beautiful! I've never been much of a fan, but that pic might inspire me!
Yeah! He died a few months ago, though. He was my best betta.

But, I have one that is growing up to be like that! Bettas are great! They are cute, and colorful, and pretty etc,etc....
Did I inspire you?

For those that asked - yes, I did tell the guy.
He just kinda shrugged and walked off. Stupid man *mutters*

I get all of my fish from Creamstone Aquatics down here... gorgeous place, they've been a great help to me and they always have a large variety of happy healthy fish to choose from.

That would be good time for the old "I'd like to speak with your manager immediately" line. Usually stops them dead in their tracks. Shrugging and walking away from a paying customer is usually frowned upon by managers.

I buy stock from one store (I drive past 2 others to get there!), because of all of the reasons mentioned above.

I do go in to the others to have a look around though.

I chose the store I buy from after looking at 5 different places. First thing I looked at was the quality of the tanks/water/fish and obviously checking for dead fish.

Next I talked to the staff. I asked questions that I knew the answers to, but pretended I didn't  You can very quickly assess their attitude towards fishkeeping after a brief conversation! The shop I buy from has a guy in there who enthusiastically talked for 10 minutes straight when I asked what food came recommended! I hadn't even asked him - I had asked one of the other assistants :D

I must comment! :D I got lucky with my fish and the petco and petsmart. My original fish (2 balas 1 convict 1 red eye tetra 2 CAES) all came from petco, they have been alive for more than 2 years, however when my two cae's died a few months ago (horrible horrible accident...must forgive myself! :-( ) I said theres no way in he!! i'm going to put petco fish in with my babies....so I drove the hour and a half to a store called tropical isle to buy my 3 clown loaches. They are sooo healthy and i love this store, its fishkeepers GALORE!

However when stocking my new cichlid tank I went to petco, and For my platties I went to petsmart, however for my new cories i went back to tropical isle!

The "real" fish store is much more expensive so I go there when I don't want to risk any of my fish that are doing well and that i have had for a long time! But if its a new tank theres always the chance even with regular water changes and checks that the tank could crash so for this reason i always start my tanks with petco or petsmart fish.

nothing in my area is that bad every now and then theres a dead fish but still betetr then all yall.. only 2 problems is walmart doesnt get enough people in fish section so it takes like 30 mins for someone to show up... and petland only had a 24 hour gaurentee but i gotta get my female betta there cuz no where else has it... another reason why i get some of my fish frmo walmart is that its not that bad and plus its really really cheap... but the main reason is i cant drive and if my parents go to walmart and uhh yeah

its just  how they do that. i went into a shop where there was 7 dead fish on was a skeleton sitting on the bottom and the other fish (kissing gournamis) were picking at the skeleton. At another shop the fish (again KG) had fungus infections and they werent even in a hospital tank. I hate shops like that

Right. I once went into PetCo and looked at their tank, and noticed that there were a total of 13 -I repeat, 13- dead fish in their four tanks. The other fish looked sick, and I personally saw several employees walk right past the tanks without even bothering to look at them! The dead fish were right in front too! I informed one of the employees, and they just looked at me like I was something that had crawled out from under a rock! It was horrible!

fish are my life, you have the same avatar as I do!
