I HATE THAT WAL MART SELLS FISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went over to my local wal mart to check out what they had in stock. All they had were 2 females. They had been sitting there for a while. I know why, they are not that pretty. They black and white. But back to my story. I went to the betta shelf to see what they had and there were 2 female betta's there(wait, I told you that already) Anyway, The cups were only about 1/4 full, and I could not believe the amount of algae build up in these cups!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the bottom had a thick layer of algae build up on each one. I asked the woman how long they had been sitting there. She said about a week and a half. I asked her when the last time the water had been changed. She gave me a blank stare! So I gave her a little lecture on the care of bettas. I told her in that size cup the water should be changed every day, and not only 1/4 the way full. I told her to fill those stupid little cups at least 3/4 the way up and that the water needs to be changed every day because of the amiona and all that other junk that gets floating around in there. That wal mart is going to be getting a letter from me in the near future. If anyone else here lives in norfolk, va and knows of the super wal mart on military highway, I encourage you to do the same.

black and white female betta.. that sounds really cool..

unfortunately yea some wal marts have people that dont know enough about fish to really be doing the job.. maybe in the letter you could include something about the proper care of the fish..

they would be more willing to change their ways if you send them a ''nice'' letter..

I definitely understand your frusteration with Walmart and their misconduct when it comes to the care of their fish especially the bettas. My second betta was a rescue mission from a walmart because they had a bunch that were dying so they were in a hurry to push them out the door and put them on clearance. I was considering buying a betta at the time as i had not owned one in four years and had done a lot of recent research reguarding what to look for in a healthy fish. It was difficult as most of them were swimming around in the tiny cups with chunks of their own fins floating around them. They had protruding scales from ammonia poisoning and popeye but i was determined to find the healthiest in the bunch so i searched through them and settled on a red betta with the least visible signs of illness. We brought him home and fussed over him, dealt with a mild case of fin rot and five months later he is now a happy healthy and angry little fish. I tribute his survival to his attitude but it continues to anger me that they have a fish department without any staff members employed that are knowledgeable enough or caring enough to proper care of these misunderstood animals. I have been at battle with a walmart employee that was trying to sell customers fish that are not appropriate for their set up. Fortunately they hardly ever bring in bettas at my local walmart.

as i say.. the best way to get things changed is to be positive.. you have to make it look like your trying to help them, and not just yell at them..

they should be more willing to change if you try to make it apparent that youre trying to help them rather than scold them

I was nice when I told her how to properly care for betta's. Didn't scold or anything. I knew if I got an attitude, she would have given one back to me and said to hell with everything I told her. The letter I am planning is going to be nice, and imformative with a few good websites describing the proper care of bettas. The only critism best recieved is good critism.

i just shake my head in despair at some of their practices. did you know that they sell bonzai trees that come in a freakin' package? they just sit on a shelf and they are bone dry, how can they get water if they are in a package? anyone buying one of these trees is buying a product that died a long time ago. one package was ripped open and i felt the soil...and it didn't feel good. it's the same as them selling fish, they never have anyone in the department and at the walmart near me it just seems that they have given up, all the tanks were dark, no lights. a dad and his kids went and checked out the fish last time i was there and they were like "why are all the tanks dark..and where are all the fish?" i told them "they are all dead". disgusting.

I battled WalMart one on one (myself and their staff) for over a year and never got results. I recently called 1 800 Walmart and waited for the last option, which is a representative of some bigwig. I told him what was going on and said "I don't have to be subjected to animal cruelty because I shop at your store".This was on a Friday and on Monday the manager of my store called me and told me that they were on it right away. It's been a little over a month and the bettas have all been in bigger cups, sparkly clean and the tanks look great. Maybe it's worth a call?

lmao bkk that sounded funny ..

why are all the fish tanks dark and where are all the fish..

''they are all dead''

LMAO.. sounds like CSI or something..

but yea.. too bad wal mart is all about $$ and not about the quality of their products

The cups are good sized, probably 4 inches across on the top and 3-3.5 on the bottom, bigger than the lfs (local fish store? (someone should post a thread that explains the acronyms to us noobs)) that I sometimes visits has, but they don't keep them very clean. But what good does the bigger cup have if they don't fill it more than a quarter the way full? I have seen, more then once, dead fish floating around in the tanks. I think I'll give em a call tomorrow.
