Agree with everyone here. Get a filter. Get a heater. No one has said it but we're all thinking stop being dumb, lazy & tight.Sure, Nelson Mandella survived 23 years in a South African Gaol. Bet he didn't like it though.
Go figure mate...

Actually I wasn't thinking that, so let's not make collective statements for the group. Especially calling people dumb.
and to the italicized - That might be a bit of an extreme comparison don't ya think.
Also, I don't know how many of you have dogs or cats here, but let me just throw that out there. Dogs and cats are MUCH bigger than a betta. How many people keep these animals in crates when they are away, kennels, dog houses, heck even our own houses..... Do you think these dogs would enjoy a larger space, sure they would. Are you willing to buy a new house so your dog has a bigger yard to play in. Are you willing to give up your dog because someone else thinks he's not happy or not taken care of, even when you know he is..... and I know what some people will reply to with this.
First off I know it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get a 5 gallon tank, however, around here they are at least $35.00 bare. Plus heater and filter, another $20.00 or so. So we are not just talking about pocket change.
Obviously the OP got this betta without realizing it might enjoy a larger home. Should he now get rid of him just because some people think it's not adequate? I don't think so.
Also, someone will point out that dogs are domesticated. This doesn't stand either because almost all of the fish we buy have NEVER I repeat NEVER have been in the rice fields in Thailand. Alll many of them know is half-gallon to gallon mason jars, cups in the lfs, etc. These bettas are not used to hundreds of miles swimming area. My clown fish was not bred in the wild and therefore does not think he is getting the short end of the stick living in a 75 gallon.
Do I think a 1/2 gallon tank is
ideal, no, but is any fish in ANY tank ideal, I say NO to that also.
