I got my first betta to put in his own bowl on saturday, and he is doing great... I am now finding myself from time to time looking round the rooms in the house to see where I could fit another bowl lol. I have a feeling that a betta will end up in every room at least!

I went to a garden centre and there I seen 2 bettas in the same tank, one of them was half the size of the other and ripped to shreds hiding in the corner  If only I had a tank for him I would have saved him :-( Could anyone tell me if in the future I do get to save a poor betta what meds should I give them? would stress coat be enough for shredded fins?

It really depends on the fish, and what they have.
I have every kind of medication under the sun you could imagine, because with all the fish I drag home, I've run into several different illnesses.

I'd keep stress coat, aquarium salt and something for ick on hand.
Then, once you bring one home you can diagnose the problem and see what you need to get.

well I have stress coat and stuff for ick, What does the salt do for them exactly? oh if they have wounds on them should you get some sort of antibactirial med?

Two of the most common problems are ich and velvet. They are both teeny tiny parasites that infect fish that have been injured or are stressed and are weaker than normal. These parasites don't like aquarium salt and it helps to keep ich and velvet from occuring and helps in curing it. Just make sure it is aquarium salt and not regular table salt. As far as any other meds, don't be in too big a hurry to medicate. Many times clean water, salt and stress coat will do the trick. If you start dosing them with meds they build up a tolerance for them and they may not help later on when you really need them. :D
