I was looking at some plants that Petco was selling and I found a beautiful large Java Fern and bought it. I think it makes my tank look much better. What do you think?

Does indeed look nice.

Agree.  I can't tell from the photo, but be careful not to bury the rhizome in the substrate or it may rot.  You can attach Java Fern to wood or rock.  The rhizome is the thick "stem" from which the leaves and fine roots grow.

When attached to a piece of wood or rock, you can then place it wherever, such as in the right rear corner to hide the filter/heater.  Java Fern does well in low light, so this is very useful.

Byron.

Indeed goldfish, it does look great!

I'd second what Byron said regarding the rhizome.  If you like the 'planted' look, you can actually just superglue it to a bit of slate, and it can merely rest on the substrate no problem.  I've even done this and 'swished' a bit of sand over the slate, and it appears to be 'rooted' to the untrained eye.

The key for the rhizome is that it needs a bit of flow around it.  Other than that, they are extremely hardy, low light plants.  Even as little as ambient room light is enough to keep them alive (although they won't really grow at all with that level of lighting).
