ok, ive got a 3ft square cube tank, complete with weir and protein skimmer etc.

im thinking of setting it up as a tank for larger fish, like volitans and maybe a grouper.

what im trying to find out is what you guys would use this for and how you would set it up?

im thinking of going for undergravel with a reverse flow through the UG plates.
lots of live rock, LOTS! and i have some halide lights too :)

would it be ok to have some large volitans and corals?

basically i have a rio 180 setup with fish and corals, but would move the corals over to this new tank and keep my rio as a FOWLR tank.

anyone got any suggestions?
i wanna use it for something really cool and make it a stunning room centrepiece :)

a 3 x 3 x 3 foot cube = 765 litres without displacement is suitable for a volitan

im not sure tbh, although a large volume of water, not that much extra swimming space. deffinatly be ok for a while. but i reckons one could still outgrow it

ok, well it doesnt have to be lionfish.
ive been looking at some wartskin anglers, they are pretty cool.

i want something thats gonna be amazing to watch and something that will also look cool.
im gonna have live rock built up in a volcano like shape, drilled through middle base of grotto rock and aquascaped to the rocks so nothing will fall over.

what would you guys keep in a tank this size?

im open to any ideas, and as i will be having halides and t5s i think ill be ok with some corals aswell :)
im not looking to make a massive reef setup with lots of fish, i just want it simple but stunning
there are a lot of fish i havent thought of, or considered before, so anything you can suggest would be great :)

I would still be looking at Wrasses, I love em

Ben, can see your point, thought they were not very active, but I don't know enough about them to disagree :good:

in my old 7ft tank i had 3 12inch+ lions, all volitans
they lived with a panther grouper and a large cleaner wrasse, a yellow tang and a flame angel.

the lions did swim about a fair bit, but tbh most of the time they sat on rocks and hovered around same areas.

i dunno at the moment.
i really want something spectacular
been looking into wartskin anglers, lions, wrasses, angels and all sorts but just dont know what to go for in the end.
money for the livestock is no real issue, and the tank is already sorted.
if i was to fill it with live rock in the middle with swimming space all round rocks, and a reverse UG flow through rocks and sand bed, then added an external filter just to make more flow and filtering, plus the skimmer, plus the weir surely that is enough to have a nice species only tank for some larger fishes?

im not too keen on a wrasse only tank, mainly cos althought they are amazing and very colourful, id want something with a bit more 'wow' if you know what i mean?

what about a nice setup of live rock, corals and some anthias? mixed with some tangs and angels? is that ok?

sorry to ask so much, im just trying to plan this as much as possible before actually commiting to something then changing my mind when its too late lol
im good at that :)

3 Foot cube how easy is that to stock I would go with a good shoal of 12 Resplendent Anthias a couple of nice small Tangs Kole and a convict tang a pair of hawian flame wrasse, a pair of Bellus or swallow tail angels

Pretty much then as many flashers and fairies I could fit in if money was no object would switch the convict tang for a Black Tang

thought you didnt want the coral set up? load of them are SPS, the most demanding corals. We can help you do it, but youll need halides at that depth...one 400w lumenarc prob, ways of maintaing calcium etc, big skimmer, loads of flow

ive got a very bright powerful halide aswell :)
gonna be hanging it over the tank on some long wall brackets
