I have three Betta fish. I have them in a Walmarts plastic bin (hard and clear) and a filter proped up on it. Because this is a temporary place for the Bettas, I really need to know the minimum and maximum area for a Betta. I really want to put the Betta on mt shelves but thats up to how much room they need. I see the Bettas at Petsmart in a small plactic cup but I dont know if thats a good idea for the long run. If that blue water all druged up so there asleep in there? The blue stuff looks like that goo from movies that preserves people for year (heh I just though about the movie Austin Powers *laughs*) Thanks, help would be great

well the blue stuff is good for them first off.

and the bettas need 1 gallon of water per betta fish. But if you can you could always do like 3 gallons each and get them some friends, like corries and ottos, or a plattie or two.

What is the blue stuff and why cant i put them in the cups that the have them in at the store (or about that size) ?????

i believe 1g is the absolutely minimum if you want your betta to be happy.

While they can survive in the tiny cups, they will not thrive and live happily. Just like if you could live forever in a bathroom stall, but you certainly won't be happy right?

they're only there temporary (hopefully anyways), so it's best to give them a good home when you get them home.

the blue stuff is called methyalene blue. it's a type of medication that would prevent diseases from hitting hte betats while they're in the tiny cups, which btw is very unhealthy and much too cramped for htem.

Please i urge you to get them some decent tanks  betats are lovely creatures and so full of personality

Please dont keep them in those horrid little cups!!!
If your not going to buy a gallon per fish then AT LEAST go buy those Kritter Keeper things, they'll, for the most part, be able to move around more!

Too, you could buy them a little silk plant to hide in/play around.

One last thing, do NOT put them ALL in the SAME tank!!! You'll end up putting them into a death match between eachother! To each HIS OWN tank.

Hope this helped you,
Tam

1 gallon tanks is minimum I would do personally , but also , stay away from the blue stuff if possible, it is to treat diseases. They put blue in there to keep them from getting sick but it also kills off any benficial bacteria so keep that in mind when trying to cycle your one gallon. Please read the pinned topics on cycling if you arent familiar with it.

Well im not that stupid to put all 3 in a tank without dividers
I cant believe a LPS who is all worried about "stress" (strees this stress that) would put them in there. There Hypocrits! grrrrr. My shelf can only support 30 Lbs. Ya think that i can get a 1 gallon tank that would sit up there? How much does a Gallon weigh? Can i put 3 1 gallon tanks up there? Im so confudes

I appologize, i know your not stupid, i was just freaking out. :*)

A gallon weights about 2-3 pounds.

because of the density difference it is entirely possible for it to wheigh more or less... (dont remember the density its been 2 years since i took it) but that is the reason...
