Hello everyone! I wanted to fill you in on some details of my new aquarium before I asked my question...
I have a newly built 28 gallon. I just started it a few weeks ago and right now I have a betta and a red rosy minnow. I also have a couple of ghost shrimp and a little cherry shrimp. I'm just trying to keep it very understocked until the nitrogen cycle gets established.
Everyone is doing real well in the tank, except for the other minnow and little goldfish who have passed away. Ouch! R.I.P. I guess that's what happens with feeder fish though.
I also have some plants in the tank, right now I have 4 wysteria and 1 Amazon Sword. I'm planning on adding a lovely piece of upright driftwood once it is sinkable and tying some plants onto it, I'm thinking maybe Anubias but I might settle for some different types of plants like maybe a java fern.
Anyways, I've just been lighting the tank with a window for a couple weeks until I get a light.
I finally got a Phillips Plant & Aquarium shoplight that is 48 inches long and 40 watts of lighting power. The light holder has 2 bulbs in it, so I guess in total that is 80 watts of Plant & Aquarium Shoplight, 48 inches long.
My next question I had was is this going to be enough light for the aquarium, and if so about how high shall I hang the shoplight? I wanted to hang the shoplight from my ceiling or the wall, either would be easy for me to do. However, how high up from the fish tank do I need to hang the shoplights?
I wanted to add there might be a tiny bit of natural shady light coming in naturally from the closed blinds of the windows. I could hang a blanket in front of the window if I wanted to to cover this up and this is a possibility, but if it's going to be good for the plants, I'd rather just leave it alone.
So if you guys know how high to hang the shoplights from my aquarium, or if you have a resource / website about this than that would be great!
Oh I forgot to mention they are the T12 variety
