I am still in the planning stages of my tank, changing my mind weekly on which inhabitants to get. What I do know is that I do not want to deal with fry, so is it ok to just have a school of male guppies, or male neons or male whatever? Or just females? (Although I generally like the flamboyant male colouring).
Will either sex survive happily without seeing the opposite sex?

You can just stock either males or females like you said. Alternatively, even if you do stock both and they do breed, as long as you have some decent sized adults in the tank, the fry probly wont make it into adulthood. Sounds a bit harsh, but its what would happen in the wild anyway, and for me, the great thing about fish-keeping is to create a mini eco-system in your front room.

I think it's more responsible to not have the fry to start with if they are not wanted. :sly:

I think you will be ok with male and female neons as I think they need particuar requirements met before they will spawn, I don't know how easy they are to sex anyway.

:)

I've kept neons for a long time now and they have never had fry, so I dont think they are like platties or guppys for breeding in my experience

Just a suggestion, but you could always go with egg layers like tetras. They are very difficult to get to spawn, althought not in my house, They are in my opinion stronger fish, and come in many different types as well as some colors, although not as colorful as a male guppy.

I really like tetras, especially serpae and flame tetras, and cardinals too. I started this whole thing because I wanted cardinals, but I think they might be too tender for a newbie like me. I have several different tank setups in my mind, I hope to choose one by the time I get my tank and get it cycled.

Most fish will not breed in a community set up except the Livebearers whom will breed any where. Other fish like Tetras especailly Neons are very challenging to breed and the eggs will not hatch in a community setup. Also Livebearers like Guppies will give birth to live young giving them more chance in a community setup, fish like Tetras are egg scaterers and the eggs aren't protected and therefore are most likely eaten.

What size tank?
Havn't decided yet. Probably a 20 gal, although on days when I feel overwhelmed with info I think I would get a 10-15 gal, and on days when I get so excited about all the beautiful fish I see, I plan on a 30 gal :fun:

soemtimes i reasearch a huge variety of fish the go to the lfs and impulse buy but thats just me and my lfs's owner is very smart and he doesn't lie so i ask him if it would work
