I had a few of them running quite a while ago. You do need a decent pump to get a nice wall of bubbles. You can hide them under a thin layer of substrate, it looks as if the bubbles are coming out of the gravel.

All i'd reall want is for one or two bubbles to come out, I guess I could DIY that thought couldnt i? just take a piece of tubing, and hook it up to a pump and poke a few holes in it. It could be done right?

Sure, or just use an airstone, you will get a finer stream of bubbles.

Air stone? Is it just a stone with a hole in the top? Could I put this under the sand to conceal it?

They are so cheap they are disposable. If they are a buck at Big Al's, they might be $2 at the lfs.

Would they last forever? Or would I have to change them?

And I would think that the shipping would cost more if you bought it online than at a LFS...

They do plug up after a while, sometimes crack. It's cheaper to get them at the lfs if it's the only thing you are buying. If you are getting something like filters, which are much cheaper online, it's cheaper to add them to your order.
