Could it bee a crab makeing the noise!?

It really puts me down and pi**sed off cos i cant sleep and worry! i just make me want to get rid of my hole tank!!! ( cos i cant adford 330l plus water around my house! nor can my mum or dad) thats right read this ....

It is interesting that the power of the "smashers" appendage can produce a blow close to the power of a .22 caliber bullet and are notoriously known as "thumb splitters". It is rumored that because of the tremendous strength these animals have, they can crack aquarium glass. From a story about how a pet Mantis Shrimp broke 1/4 inch aquarium glass, that was posted in The Daily Mirror (a British Newspaper) on Friday, April 10, 1998, page 11, this documentation leads us to believe that this is possible.
takeing from hear Hear

It will only make the nosies when lights are off! i would get one or two clicks about half hour after lights off! but this morning it was too much i cant stand the noise! trying to sleep but i cant!!!

Iv had my lr over 6months! and the noise is only starting to happen the larst month or 2!! no l/r or coral has really been added that it could hitch hike from :(

please please please please someone help me!!!!!!!!

It's most likely a pistol shrimp. They pretty commonly come with live rock and are harmless. I had them in my reef tank for years and my friend's 400 gallon tank with lots of lr makes so much clicking at night it's unbelievable.

A mantis shrimp capable of (in theory) breaking glass would have to be fairly big (they grow up to 30 cm) so you'd probably have seen them. You'd also have noticed your fish and critters disappearing to these predators.

Yeah I wouldnt worry to much about it. As the above poster said a mantis that is big enough to actually break glass will have been noticed by more then the sounds by now. It could be a pistol shrimp or it could even just be hermit crabs or snails shells tapping against the glass or rockwork. The noice is most likely there during the day as well but you havent noticed it due to other noises around you. I have noticed my hermits crabs tend to walk around the edge of my tank fairly often and when they do they tend to tap their shells against the glasss with every step :)

I really wouldnt worry about it.

Hello thanks for the replys its defo not hermints!!! but about 3weeks ago a caught a mantis shrimp wouldnt of that killed the pistrol shrimp!?

i really cant stand it anymore and iv read trigger fish good for catching them??? any input on this????

also i see a crab that i never new i had larst night . looked like it was eating my turbo snail tho i got lots empty turbo sanils in there so could been an empty one?

Agreed, I wouldn't worry too much about it. And yes it's very possible that you have/had multiple pistol and/or mantis shrimp without them getting into a battle royale. These shrimp are more timid and defensively territorial if that makes sense. They tend to stay in/defend a small area and be very reclusive rather than be roaming killing machines that people make them out to be
