Thank you! I try hard to provide the right info. So I guess everyone makes mistakes and that is how we all learn.

Agreed. I used to make mistakes too, until i learned everything.

But technically you didn't make a mistake. You suggested people keep their nitrates as low as possible, below 20ppm. That is good advice. Unfortunately not everyone can keep it below 20ppm but in the interests of the fish, and providing them with as good a water source as possible, it is definitely a good bit of advice. Everyone should try to keep their nitrates as low as possible.

cheeky buggar. I thought I was the only one who knew everything :D

Well high nitrates will cause a lot of problems with your fish. It's called nitrate poisoning. You need to keep doing the water changes. You really need to lower thos nitrates. Maybe add some live plants and use prime water conditoner. They need to be kept lower then 20ppm, your are very high.

Sorry Colin, but this suggests to me that Chicklette was implying that levels above 20ppm will cause problems (nitrate poisoning).

I agree that nitrates should be kept low if possible as a matter of good tank maintenance, but to suggest that levels above 20ppm will cause nitrate poisoning is absolutely incorrect.

ok from now on she can tell people to keep their nitrates as low as possible and attempt to keep it below 20ppm for optimum fish health

No, not even. As i think i've stated in this thread already, theres evidence to suggest that levels of up to 400ppm can be withstood with no ill effects, and 20ppm has no real significance to anything. Some peoples tap water can have levels higher than that.

I think the highest concentration from the tap i've heard of is 80ppm, so it would be reasonable to suggest that 100ppm would be a good maximum to aim for in the quest for optimum fish health, as it's well within the researched safe levels and is not above the level of most tap waters.

That said, the best recommendation in my opinion, is not to specify a specific value but to suggest that aquarists keep nitrate levels as close as possible to the level from the tap. This is a good indication that your aquarium maintenance schedule is sufficient.

ok, sounds good :)
keep nitrate levels as close to tap water as possible

That is what I will say now. Just keep them as low as possible.
