I am thinking about getting a cichlid tank. What size tank do yo think i should get for a cichlid tank. And what tyoe of Subsitrate should i get and what type of fish should i get. Just suggestions. I won't be getting it any time soon but info would be a good start

Thanks :D :look:

what kinds of cichlids are YOU interested in,this will help determine what size tank you should get or need.

Smart move TFF, asking here first.

I believe the primary and most important factor to consider when choosing cichlids (Or any other fish for that matter.) is the pH and hardness of your tap water.

So... grab a few test kits and get those readings so you base your first decision on ecological science. This is the first step in eliminating future problems. :)

i think a good starter cichlid set-up would be a 20-30 gallon aquarium. a good starter cichlid would be a convict. they are very hearty and very outgoing.

Agree on the Convict, nice fish, really like them. I say get the largest tank you have room for and can afford. I'm always wishing mine was bigger. :D

Thanks

I don't know yet what size it will be but i am hopping to atleast get to 50. My other tank is a 29 and a 10 gal tank and a 5 that isn't being used right now. My 29 and 10 gal have fish in them right now. I have never had a cichlids before and i heard alot of good things about them.

Thanks for the advice you guys and gals :D

I would start out with a 55 or a 75 gal! , If you go any smaller you will just be mad at yourself! :p I know is was when i bought my first tank 20 gal, then another tank 4 weeks later a 75 lol, For cichilds Go with some Labidochromis sp. "Red Top Kimpuma - Super Red" there my fav, easy too , don't fight too much  Just look around see what ya !! But i BEWARE once you start with cichlids you can't stop lol good luck to you :D

I chose to keep malawi cichlids because their water requirements were not far off from the ph + hardness of the tap water i get. Also you have to keep a check on your budget cos most of the more colourful cichlids will cost double even triple the price of others. Also you dont want to be mixing different cichlids (best to stick to one species).

I bet there great and addictive. Caus ei heard alot o good things about them plus i am already addicted to my Cyniprids and Tetras (charicines)

I can't stop buying more :D

Its true. When ever i go to the fish shop to get some food or a plant, i end up coming out with a fish. The are so colourful (without being genetically modified ;)) and have lots of different behaviours. So u best start doing some overtime at work:p

I've got the same problem with plecos. I cant help buying then as well :)
