Hydor External Heater

thank you sian but i cant run one on my fx5 because the pipe is 25mm and the heater requires a 16mm pipe i think , so my pipe is far to big thank you any way

hi once again
ive just looked at your filter and the tubing looks exactly the same as mine you could always check the part number for yours as against a fluval 305. Ribbed Hosing fluval part number A20015 good luck

it does look the same but trust me the diameter is different cheers

as for the post about using a pump to link to the heater where do i put the pump im not running a sump anymore on this tank so i would have to put a pump in the main thats defeating the object as i might aswell just use a normal heater and it will take up less room , or have i missed something

cheers

The pump I have has 2 fittings on it, an inlet and an outlet. You can either put the pump inside the tank, or in your case you can put it in your cabinet and then run a lenght of hose from the inlet to your tank and then on the outlet side you can fit the hydor and then continue the hose in to your tank. The pump does not need to be submersed in water. Does that make sense?

cheers yes it does make sense but would it be efficient like that as i could draw in water that is already upto temp and not heat it

Well that would be the drawback as the pump would need to be running 24/7 regardless of whether the water is up to temperature or not.
I just looked at my pump and it is 1750lph and 50w, so its fine for my water changes but not the most efficient for long term use. I cant believe for one minute that you would need a pump anywhere near as powerfull as that if you were going to use it for heating your water.
Have a look at some pumps for something more economical that you can fit 16mm hoses to but just make sure it doesnt have to be submersed, also when I fitted my hydor even though I used 16mm hoses I reckon I could have squeezed something a couple of mm smaller on it.

I too bought a 300 watt Hydor and I have the Fluval 404. Will the ribbed hose install in the compression fittings of the Hydor without issue? I don't want to start cutting the hose only to find it does not seal properly.

Thanks.

I have a Hydor 200, was reading this interesting thread and had a couple comments. I agree of course that a Hydor couldn't heat fresh cold tap water up to tropical temps right away, but I -have- noticed that the Hydor seems efficient and powerful, seeming to me to heat a tank significantly faster than a traditional heater. Certainly seems like the water movement is a major factor in the difference.

I also was thinking about the suggestion for finding a "right-sized" water pump and just placing it in the tank cabinet, putting the Hydor on its own private little circulation loop. It strikes me that with the right plastic intake/outlet additions, this would be a great way to combine in the additional desirable function of getting some "powerhead action," ie. some bottom circulation help along with the heating. It would only come at the slight negative cost of perhaps having a couple of additional pipes going down into the aquascape (I've always thought one of the nice features of the inline heaters on the filter return was that the whole heater just "disappeared" from inside the tank.)

Plus the cost of running the pump and additional risk of a leak, but we won't discuss awful things like that this evening...

I have a 300w ETH in the return-leg of my filter current and it heated the tank up very quickly indeed. Most impressed that the Marina LCD pegged at the desired level too - expected some difference.
