I was just curious. I have many parrots, and have a travel carrier for each in case of an evacuation for a hurricane. This is my first season having an aquarium though. I know moving my bettas will be easy enough, but what do people with tanks of other fish do in case of evacuation? Do you just leave them and hope for the best? Do you have some sort of cooler or something to use? I'm just trying to be prepared just in case. After Ivan last year, I now know just how little time you have sometimes.

if u want to carry ur fish u can put them in plastic bags filled with water(wif oxygen)and then put them in styrofoam boxes

i used to live in NC, saw quite a few hurricanes in my time there (none extreamly serious) but i do know that they suck. last year was an awful season and they are predicting one just as bad or worse for this year. your best bet would be to move your tanks to your basement of u have one, and if not, perhaps prepare to bag them up and box em so that you can store them away to ride out the storm.

whats it like seeing one and being in he middle of one?? im in the Uk so have never seen one only on american shows i watch sometimes

I don't stay around to find out what a hurricane is like! I just want to be prepared to evacuate if I do need to. Even if it isn't that bad of a hurricane, there's usually a power outage involved. Last year I had to evacuate for Hurricane Ivan, and took myself and my baby, 2 big dogs, 2 cats and SEVEN parrots to a city 150 miles away. The trip took 6 hours due to all the other people evacuating at the same time.

Would a cooler work? If I filled it with water from the aquarium and had a battery powered air pump. I would bag them up for the ride, but then set them up in the cooler when I arrived where I would be staying for the evacuation time. Or would it be better just to leave them behind and hope for the best? I know the stress of moving them would not be good. Don't think I'm crazy :p I just want to be prepared.

Uh oh! I dont have a basement :( . I have 4 tanks UP STAIRS!!! what to do, what to do?

Dont home owners insur. take care of the busted tanks tho?

I will take the fishies with me, but if home owners'll take care of the tanks, I'll leave 'em...

It should.......I know of a friend that bought a 150G freshwater cichilid tank, and when that nasty tornado came around the metro last year, a 2x4 slamed into his tank.......he lost all of his fish, had to replace the wood under the flooring AND the carpet, and his Incs. paid for all of it, except the fish and the time it took him to clean everything up! Shesh, I guess it also depends on what incs. you have....

well it also depends on the area too i think. See my house doesn't have flood insurance. But one street over have it b/c thats a flood zone. Unfortunately, my insu. may not cover it now that i think of it b/c I dont live in an area prone to tornados or anything like that. I guess I'll just put up somewhere to be safe...
