Preparing and praying about Hurricane Laura. We only live about 40 miles from Galveston, TX, which is in the Hurricane watch area. If storm comes in as Category 3 or 4, power will be out for a couple of weeks. I’ve bought battery air bubblers and cleaning tanks today. Anybody been through this and have any suggestions? With 15 tanks, I pray we get spared the effects of the storm but need to be prepared.

Here's hoping you stay safe <3
Here in the UK we do often get gusts (like today) but recent years we're quite susceptible to flooding :( I was always fascinated by twisters but can never appreciate fully what it must be like. Sorry I have no advice for the tanks, but just wanted to wish you well!

I've got 3 battery air bricks that give off some power and when we have electric cuts here we're never alerted and to hold warmth i brought thermal camping blankets in silver.

The obvious first concern is for you and your family. Stay safe. You can replace fish easier than family! (Yea, I wrote that) Stock up on things you may need as with power outages, most stores stop selling because cash registers don't work and gas pumps can't pump. Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible. Unless you cook with gas, make sure you have plenty of propane for the gas grill as you could be cooking meals outside. If you have any extra freezer space, buy some ice for cooler(s) as the fridge will only stay cold enough for a short time...and use any refrigerated food first as it will go bad as the temp in the fridge drops. Even if the bags of ice stay in the freezer, they will help frozen food stay frozen longer.

As for the tanks, at least it's not winter in the north in an all electric house!
If you do lose power, you'll want to get those battery operated air systems up and running. You'll want to unplug any external filters so foul water isn't pumped back into the tank when the power comes back on. You'll also want to get any bio media from any external filters (HOB or canisters) into the tanks, perhaps sitting on top of bubblers to keep water flowing through the media. Feed very, very lightly as less food = less waste and better water quality.
For the most part, that's all you can do.

Thanks. It gets hot hear with no air. The bubblers will at least provide some oxygen. I hope we are spared although I don’t wish anyone get a direct hit.

I was on the outskirts of a hurricane Wilma about 12-15yrs ago while on holiday in the Caribbean. I’m afraid I’ve no advice whatsoever. Best of luck though.

So scary, thoughts with you all. I hope you don't need the back ups, but it's always good to be as prepared as possible.

I just hope yourself & family and pets keep safe and humidity with no air is the worst you can have :friends:, we've just got over it hear and winds are coming like mad with storm frances. Keep safe :)

You too! We do have a 30’ RV. If worse comes to worse, we can park it in the driveway and hook it up to our gas generator. That will keep us cool at least. I have one more smaller generator and wonder if a small window A/C we keep for emergency could run off of it in the fish room. Then my poor goldfish who are in the den would be the only ones to worry about getting too hot. I’ve lived close to Galveston all my life. Only 5 hurricanes in all of those years were direct hits. Never had tanks of fish with the others. I knew I would eventually have to deal with this. 2020 needs to end!

Yes generators work for fish tanks, i mentioned one to my husband and it was a no go with the fumes apparently but a lot of people do use them.
.

I really feel for you & many others who go through this one way or another different countries being hit badly either by hurricanes / storms and fires but high humity on top omg it's a nightmare.

Lucky we're on high ground where flooding here doesn't affect we.
