humane way to put fish down?

I have never killed a fish. If i know that a fish is going to die i just let it die in the tank and then i flush it. I hope this is not a cruel way to get rid of a dead fish. I just couldnt imagine putting a fish to sleep. I just let them die naturally.

Yeah, I was the same as well...till I had oe fish die of dropsy then another one 2 weeks later get it...I wasn't going to see that poor fishie go through what the other one went through. Couldn't eat, move, or defend itself against other fish trying to prod it to move

I agree with the clove oil method too

I've had to use it 3 times now and although its not easy to have to end a life its better than letting them suffer. Its very quick and the fish don't even seem to notice at all as they are pretty sick to start with. Mine are usually gone within a minute of very slowly adding the solution. I then leave them in there for an hour to make sure

I hate the smell of clove oil now though

If you flush a dead fish you are then introducing a diease into your local eco system. This IMHO is moraly reprehensible. Please cremate, bury the dead fish or at the very least wrap it in newspaper and put it in with your household waste.

I have only used vodka. I have heard that alka seltzer works too. I will try to find some clove oil. I personaly don't like to see a fish suffer so I don't let them die a slow death in the tank. There are usually tank mates that start nipping or eating on the dying fish. If I know for sure they are goners, then I put them to sleep and dispose of them in the trash or throw them out in the woods behind the house.

I've had 3 fish die recently, 2 due to dropsy. They were alone in a tank/bowl so I just let them pass away. I don't have the heart to put them in a baggy and pound their head into an edge or decapitate them. I can't find clove oil in the pharmacies here either so I just let them pass on. I buried the two females in one of my potted plants but I flushed the male who died of dropsy. Oops, I will never flush another sick fishy again
