i purchased 4 koi platies a few months back unfortunatly two died but the other two are doing great, one as stayed around the 3" mark wheres the other is more than 3 times the size and is 5+ inches long will she keep growing? shes the biggest fish in my tank including all my mollies and my male sailfin molly, is this normal???

cheers Darren

it might not be a platy but a swordtail. Koi platies are rare so if it's a koi it's quite possibly a swordtail. I've never seen a pure platy grow to that size but platy/sword crosses can. There are massive swordtail strains that can be six or seven inches long but ornamental varieties stay around four or five inches. Koi is a human bred variety, there are none in the wild.

seems a little strange how one is huge and one is just 3-4 inches out of the same batch, theyre definately platies, as i had a male with no sword on his fin, who unfortunely died. ill post pics when i get my camera lead lol

I would be very interested to see this...
Because females can mate with several males, store the sperm and therefore be pregnant to more than one male at once it's possible - unlikely, but possible - that even if the fish you have were thrown by the same female, the huge one is a swordtail hybrid.

Or otherwise it's just a freak of nature.

i just got a Koi Sword Platy, they are seet! my male has the sword but the female doesn't.

Thats not a full koi sword...

and its not a platy...

They are just called koi swordtails, or christmas swrods.

This is a proper koi swordtail

Hello All,
Found this interesting thread via google. The picture linked above by omega59 was mine. Just wanted to share few things which I know about koi swordtails. The Koi swordtail strain in my picture was created by Andrew Soh. They were a mix of red and white (tranparent to be precise) in colour. There are multiple patterns
Red-white - Andrew calls them as Red Cap Tango - common in a brood
Red-White-Red - common in a brood
White-Red - less common in a brood
Pure White - rare
i.e if a koi sword tail pair is bred, a brood may contain any of the patterns listed

The LFS people name them as they wish like half koi or full koi etc. But all of them carry same genes or from the same parent

Following two fishes are brothers and sisters from the same parent and both the fishes belong to me. I knew a bit about koi swordtails and Andrew as I know him a bit personally.

Nice to be here.

great info and i didn't know the image was yours LOL.
i have made some photo's as well to share from my other threat. maybe you can help ID my koi's.

The male koi in your link above is a red cap tango
female is not very clear
As I said these are just marketing names for the Andrew's koi swordtail. All of them are genetically same.
Or in other words the phenotypic expressions of Andrew’s koi swordtails are different but they are genetically same.

Cheers,
Mohan.
