I have a HRP pair. They areboth 2 inches and both are in breeding color yet female won't lay eggs as I can tell. I have plenty of dither fish (1 giant danio, 2 rosy reds, 2 bristlenose, and a Sengal Bichir) in the 2L x 1W x 1T. I can't put them in the other tank cause of the Commion Plecostmus that will occupy the tank till it warms up to at least 70 outside (long winter ahead.) Help me. Male will act like he is fertilizing when nothings there.

Have they bred before ? if not then they may not be quite ready. I have a P motaguense female that is constantly in breeding dress, but the male is not ready. Are all the water stats right ? Do they have a cave/pot of their own etc.

In a 2x1x1 thats 15g I think they wont breed because they are so cramped, the bichir needs much much more than that. I think that a 15 is okay like only just okay for HRPs to breed in but not long term they need at least a 20-25 IMO idealy a 29 minimum. You have quite a lot of messy fish in a small tank I would check nitrate and other stats as well as bad water will stress them as well.

Mine are very private with their breeding and often I think it is at night or evening usually after a water change. If you can get a 25g I would keep them with a few swordtails or platies for the upper levels.

When the male looks like he is fertilizing that is called shivering and its showing your female he is ready. But it is usually the female that will determine whether it is safe or suitable to lay eggs at which point she will produce eggs but until then the male just goes frustrated.

I think the route cause of your problems is the small tank double the size and get rid of the bichir and you should be good to go :)

I have a 29. let me check the measurements again. oh, it's 17 inches Tall. My bad and they water is good. I clean it twice weekly. She has chossen the cave and I believ the size s problem. Bichir is temoray, he will be given to my aunt when he reaches size not to be eatyen by a channel cat. I hope she eats that thing before I put it in there, he might look at it as a nightcrawler. I think size is the problem. she ca't be ready. I feed her alot to fatten her up but, male usually gets to the food first. They refuse to eat FD plankton

Okay then :) If your happy with that. But my female is under 2 inches now and has been breeding weekly for about 3-4 months. Good luck!

I will do another change in a second. They both where moving gravel last night, good sign?

Yeah digging is a good sign :)
