well, my dad is opposed to any 'large tank' in my room. so no 20 gallon i had planned for, not even a 10! but, since everything and everyone (my dad included) think 5 gallons are teeny, i'm going for it.

in said 5 gallon, i will divide and conquer. Pierce and another Betta will be placed side-by-side in a nicely set up tank. i have a sponge-filter made for anything 5 gallons and under, which will be run by my current air pump. meaning, the tank and hood are only 40-50 dollars. not much to spend here! i'll buy 5 pounds of gravel, lots of silk and soft plastic (i'll explain later) plants, as well as two of the funky caves i love to death. sound like it'll work?

queshies! first, what's the largest heater i can stick in there? i have a 250w in my 10 (too much someone told me, why?) and i can only get my hands on 50 and 100w heaters. also, how much does a 'normal' 5 gallon weigh? water, glass and 5 pounds of rocks included?

i found 'safe plastic plants'. they aren't hard and stiff at all. remember those fnky little flower-making kits they used to sell for girls, with the goopy stuff you put in a wire? it would bend and twist when it dried? well, plants made with the same soft of thing are quite good. granted, they *CAN* tear, but my Pierce hasn't had a single bad thing happen so far, and his tank is cramped. =)

about the heaters...a general rule of thumb is 5 watts per gallon. So for the 10 gallon tank a 50 watt tank would do. For the 5 gallon tank you're getting you can get a 25 watt heater.

the lady who works at my lfs.......and is also the only knowledgeable person that works in the entire valley says she has a 250w heater in her 5 gal..........i don't know this is the best thing just saying from what she told me

What are you going to use to divide your 5 gallon? I thinking of doing the same with my 5 gallon. I was going to check my local home improvement store for plexie glass ( I don't know how to spell that  ) and having it custom cut according to the slits I'll cut into the black rim on top of the 5 gallon.
:fish:

i was going to use report binder spines (once i figure out what they ARE) and stiff craft-meshy stuff people use for needlepointing. aquarium seal the spines to the tank, slide the mesh in, bind it down, and voila; insta divider!

cheaper than plexiglass too =)
