Well, after a tail mauling one of my guppies has developed fin rot despite treating the tank to prevent it. I added Tetra Medica on Monday but he's got a lot worse. I've read that you should use a broad-spectrum antibiotic, is what I used up to the job?It specificially says it treats fin-rot.

It says to repeat the doseage after 7 days if no improvement is seen, I doubt he'll last that long as he spent all day hiding to the extent that I thought he was dead and gone, would doing a 20% water change and repeating the treatment now be too soon? I don't want to damage the healthy fish.

Any help would be appreciated, the local lfs shuts in an hour so if I need anything I'd like to get it tonight.

I recommend you go buy some medicine called: Melafix this stuff will hopefully sort your problem out. It treats damaged fins and open wounds and bacteria.

Melafix is the best!!! I thought my swordtail would surely pass, he had a hole in his back so deep you could see his spine. He is almost completely healed now, with a few scars.

Hi Tenko :)

How's your guppy? What product did you get and is it helping? Please give us an update.

Or u could try Myxazin by Waterlife. It's for treating bacterial infections like fin rot, ulcers etc.

Unfortunately, by Friday, 2 guppies were showing signs of fin rot. The first one was losing his top fin as well of his tail shrivelling. The other guppy was losing a segment of his tail.

I decided that tetra medica general tonic was next to useless so I performed a third water change and added Waterlife Myxazin. It's a broad-spectrum bactericide, hope that does the job. I also got a large breeder trap and herded the 2 guppies inside so I could keep an eye on them.

The least affected guppie has got no worse and may even be recovering a little. I let him back out into the tank this morning as they seemed to be getting on each others nerves a bit.

The sickest guppy doesn't seem to be improving. Was myxazin the right thing to get? It may kill harmful bacteria but would it work on secondary infections?

The first guppy died yesterday, the second guppy is doing well and the affected part of his tail has started growing back.

Sorry to hear about the 1st guppy :-(

IME, Myxazin won't kill off bacteria as the hospital tank never go into a mini cycle. But I don't know if it'll treat secondary infections cause most of the time when you discover such, the immune system is so low in the fish that the chance of recovering is little :X
