Body shape mostly. But the colors you mentioned are all Maculatus colors. Though they have been cross-bred back and forth.

a i said before i found site with difrent platies on i have a gold twin bar, red taile sunset Variatus (Male)

mine just seem to look like the variatus, ill try get pics

Hmm, okay. I'd love to see pictures. Keep in mind now all sites label correctly too. If I could see pictures, I'd be able to tell you for sure. As males are the hardest to tell if they are Variatus or not. They look very similar.
