How To Set Up An Easy Planted Tank

Good video, few points :)

1) How did you fill up the tank? thats one important point, as filling it up with water without destroying all your hard work isnt that easy.

2) Any substrate alternatives? As your decided combo would cost your average joe an arm and a leg :)

Hope George doesn't mind me filling in for him.

1) The aquarium was slowly filled up via the filter.
2) A variety of substrates was used to provide the necessary nutrients, but also because these were all left overs from other scapes and were going spare.

SJ2K, there are loads of choices that you could do.
1) ADA Aqau soil on it's own. Any of the three types available. Amazonia, Malaya or Africana. But I've heard negative points about the ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia II.
2) Eco-complete on it's own.
3) Tropica substrate with an inert substrate ontop.
4) Tetra substrate with an inert substrate ontop.

Thanks for taking the time to answer :) id be interesting to hear a little more about how you use the filter to fill the aquarium, sounds like a clever idea!

Yes, thanks, Fred.

I simply poured the water into the top of the Juwel internal filter.

Normally I pour over a plastic plate that floats.

Cheers.

Good one George. I think it would be a good idea to put a list of plants and other materials used (with suppliers) as part of the blog, almost like a recipe!

Hey Dubby

Great idea. I'll let Matt know.

Thanks!!!!
I had gone of real plants but this video has made me hungry again :D
going to get supplies to aqua-scape my 30l

Its probably not a good idea to pour the water in the filter on an established tank though, as it will more than likely cause a bacteria bloom.

How? Im curious.
Because water is travelling through it? Despite the fact that, that is what filters do? Water is pumped through the filter and out the other end. How does pouring water in make any difference?

I said probably for a reason - that's just my experience. Twice over the years its happened when adding water via the filter. Its just like washing the media under a tap.

I always add about half of the water before planting. Is it better to plant first? It did look easier the way you did it, but everything looks easier with you doing it...

I really liked the vidio. I learned a lot that will be very helpful soon. I am about to set up several tanks. I would love to see more vidios. It is much easier when you actually see it done rather than reading about it. :good:

I hope you don't start skipping the simple stuff. That is where a lot of beginners go wrong. Too many that already know assume that others do too. We don't know, and I am personally glad that someone actually realizes that.

Thanks again. It was really helpful. :good:

It makes no difference how much water is in, some people fing it easier without water as you can get the plants closer together but you have to be careful not to disturb them when filling up, and mke sure you have a bottle to spary water.

With water in it is sort of hard to tell exactly where you are sticking the plants. Maybe it would be good for a beginner to plant all but one corner with out water. Then use a bowl or something to add water. Then there would just be the one section to fill in. (In a section where larger plants are going...) That might be an idea. I will try that and see how it goes. :good:

Thanks again for the info and ideas. :good:

Next one should be a walk through of a high tech planted :) including how to measure Co2 levels etc, thats the scary bits for newer people.
